First Impression: My Spring Days

MBC's newest Wednesday-Thursday drama My Spring Days premiered and is already showing promise. Kam Woo Sung and Sooyoung's chemistry is undeniable and exceeds expectations, what age difference?

My Spring Days is about a woman who gets another chance at life when she receives a heart transplant and vows to live her life to the fullest, she then meets and falls in love with her donor's widower. Sooyoung (Girls' Generation; Dating Agency: Cyrano) plays Lee Bom Yi, a clinical dietitian who undergoes a much needed heart transplant, she vows to live and have goals unlike before. Kam Woo Sung plays Kang Dong Ha, a single father of 2 who also happens to fall for the recipient of his wife's donated heart he will have to compete with his younger brother Kang Dong Wook (Lee Joon Hyuk), who is currently dating Bom Yi. Bae Ji Won (Jang Shin Young) is head of Hae Gil Hospital's PR and is often favored by Bom Yi's mother, Jo Myung Hee, for her hard work. I admit that I was a little apprehensive about this one because this was Sooyoung's first leading role for a main broadcasting network and the comments weren't very good, but I put my faith in her skills and am not disappointed at all.
After watching both episodes, I must say that I am enjoying the plot and acting so far. We are introduced to Dong Ha at the same time as Bom Yi and I like how they chose to do this. We didn't see him before and we were showed a side of him only when Bom Yi met him at the meat market so the misunderstanding was something the character and audience viewed together. He's a character who is rough around the edges, but is shown to be a but of a softy once you get to know him. He's a very complex character so far and I like how have seen different sides within these first 2 episodes. He was a jerky meat salesman, a loving father, and a no nonsense CEO all within 2 hours. Having him suffer from insomnia was a nice touch because we truly see how much his wife's death affected him and he was surprised when he learned he slept soundly all night. He hasn't made that connection to Bom Yi yet, but once his feelings start to develop then he'll start to connect the dots. For now, all he sees are the similarities between her and Yoon Su Jeong (Min Ji Ah) and he can't help but become more curious.
Dong Wook explained to Bom Yi's father, Lee Hyuk Soo (Kwon Hae Hyo), about cellular memory which in theory states that body parts (namely the cells) can retain memory and not only the brain so someone who receives a transplant from someone can gain their donor's memories without knowing it. This will be a central theme of the drama and we've already seen some of it occur. When Bom Yi sees Kang Pu Reum (Hyung Seung Min) and Kang Ba Da (Gil Jung Woo), she begins to cry and doesn't know why. She's never seen these children before and nothing was going on to warrant any tears from her. When she was sleeping next to Dong Ha in a later scene, we see his insomnia kicking and she subconsciously strokes his hair the way Su Jeong used to. These aren't things she'd normally do so this shows it's beginning to take affect. We also see that his daughter Pu Reum has a similar personality to Bom Yi, which also may be somewhat close to how Su Jeong acted when she was alive. Pu Reum told her father that she thought it was weird how she "saw" much of her mother in Bom Yi and it felt strange to her, luckily her father felt the same thing which will only bring them closer as time goes on. Even though she has the heart of his decease wife, it will be Bom Yi's own personality that will have her determine who she wants to be with.
As of right now, Bom Yi is set to marry Dong Wook who is a surgeon at Hae Gil Hospital and of course, Dong Ha's younger brother. I've seen some fans wonder whether or not he is serious about his feelings for Bom Yi and I think he is. His words seemed genuine and he was very honest that he said he was curious about the woman who received his sister-in-law's heart, but eventually fell for Bom Yi because of who she is, not who's heart she has inside of her chest. I do admit even though I know who the OTP is, I find them very cute and he seems to care about her a lot. Even Dong Ha mused that he hadn't seem him that happy before and that was only briefly seeing him hugging Bom Yi (he didn't know it was her though) so I will imagine the surprise when he finds out his dongsaeng has been dating and is getting married. While I do understand why he's keeping the truth about the heart, it's something that he's hiding his past with Ji Won from everyone. From what I gather, they broke up over a misunderstanding and he believed a rumor about her dating to get a promotion, the question is why she lets him continue to think this. She's not completely heartless, but could be at the center of a attempted hospital takeover so her role in everyone's lives will be very interesting.
Aside from the main cast, we have great secondary characters well. Pu Reum and Ba Da are amazing and will aid in bringing their dad and Bom Yi together, she already wants to be Pu Reum's friend. Then we have Bom Yi's parents, Hyuk Soo and Myung Hee, who bicker, but seem to care about each other (as witnessed when Myung Hee defended her husband against the hospital board) and definitely love Bom Yi to go through everything they did to get her that heart before she died. We do know this decision is what caused Hae Gil's Organ Transplant Center to close down, it was said Hyuk Soo caused it 5 years ago (Bom Yi's surgery was also 5 years ago). It's also nice to see them behind her impending marriage to Dong Wook, maybe they're just happy that she's found someone to be with despite all she's been through. I see them as very good parents who want nothing but the best for her.
With every drama we have to have the lovable sidekicks ans Bom Yi has hers in Joo Se Na (Ga Deuk Hi) who works with her in the hospital cafeteria, Se Na is a true friend to Bom Yi and I hope she sticks around for the entirety of the drama. Dong Ha has his ranch hand Jo Gil Dong (Jang Won Young) who's first meeting with Bom Yi didn't go well, but you can tell he's loyal to Dong H then we have the company secretary Park Hyung Woo (Lee Jae Won) who isn't afraid to tell his boss that he's still "hot, hot, hot", I have a feeling he'll be a main cupid in our couple getting together. So far, no useless characters and everyone somehow has a purpose and connects to Dong Ha and Bom Yi in some way.

If you haven't seen this drama yet, I suggest you check it out. It's well worth it. If you want to discuss My Spring Days then come join in the conversation on Soompi in the official thread!
