Pretty Man/Bel Ami Episode 7 Recap
Second lead syndrome strikes again! It's not because Choi David is so awesome, but Ma Te is a bit of a lazy jerk who needs to do some of the labor Bo Tong is always doing. He appreciates her work, but still that should also come with not taking advantage of the other person which is exactly what he tends to do. Can't exactly root for him just yet, but perhaps time will come. But there was a major secret revealed in this episode, I just gaped when I heard it. Will you, too?
Episode 7
The socks aren't selling that well and everyone is worried especially Bo Tong who thinks Ma Te will go into debt if they don't sell out. He walks out of the studio and Yu Ra calls him wondering is he isn't going to use the Queen of Connections right now. He doesn't see how this will help, but Yu Ra knows otherwise. So he puts in an emergency call to In Joong who is preparing kimchi to give to a few of her connections. He asks for help, but she tells him a rule in connections: Don't use them to sell products. He then thinks back to Electric Fairy telling him about controlling hearts. Ma Te tells her he's going to be a different kind of connection and wonders how since people are connected by their interests. He then sees Bo Tong begging a PD to go on camera to help sell the socks, he feels bad she's crying because of him. He clarifies saying he'll be In Joong's lover. Yes because I can totally see how this can not go wrong. It takes her a little while to think, but then says to give her five minutes. David sees Bo Tong's nervousness and tells the staff to offer free gifts with purchase, they don't want to because they can get in trouble but he says he'll take responsibility for it. With less than 10 minutes left, the calls begin going up, it's so fast that the crew is even surprised at this. Ma Te wonders how it's possible, but breathes a sigh of relief.
We then see a celebrity, Myo Mi (cameo by Kim Ji Yoon) who's manager is furious at her recent post about cleaning socks. She knows anything she posts becomes a hot topic, but Myo Mi doesn't necessarily care and asks for noodles. In Joong thinks about Ma Te and starts using the card wallet he gave her. Bad feeling coming back.
Hong Ran doesn't look too happy with the news of the socks selling out and tells one of her other minions assistants to send a giant basket of flowers to Yu Ra's cafe. She gets them and see In Joong enlisted Myo Mi's help then she looks serious as she asks for the chairman to get better to preserve his position.
Bo Tong and David are looking at the news of Myo Mi's SNS post, David wonders if Ma Te knows her but Duk Saeng says how could he? Myo Mi is a world star. Ma Te comes in and he wants to celebrate, but then gets a text from In Joong tell him to meet her somewhere. He gives his credit card and heads out. He meets In Joong and learns she and her husband have been separated for more than 3 years.
Due to Ma Te just leaving, Bo Tong gets drunk while eating with David and Duk Saeng at a restaurant. Back with Ma Te, In Joong wants to go somewhere more private but Bo Tong drunk dials him before he can respond to In Joong's request. He feigns a very[weak] excuse that one of his employees has a ruptured appendix and he rushes out.
David has followed Bo Tong outside and takes her home since she's drunk. Ma Te stops by to see Bo Tong, but she's sleep then talks in her sleep when he starts to leave. She says that Ma Te's face will only last so long. Outside, Ma Te immediately begins to place blame on David for Bo Tong being drunk and having to walk home. David tells him she was piggybacked and this upsets Ma Te until David adds that Duk Saeng was the one who did it. David then turns it back on him and asks Ma Te why he drove Bo Tong to drink. Then asks if he knows Myo Mi since she is responsible for the socks selling out. Ma Te tells him he's too humble, it's all thanks to him and Bo Tong for the socks. On his way home, Ma Te spots a billboard with Myo Mi on it.
The next day Bo Tong comes out to eat breakfast and David laughs at her face because Ma Te drew on it. Instead of being upset, she's happy knowing he touched her face to do so.
Yu Ra gets a phone call informing her that Hong Ran had been in hiding in New York for 3 years. Then we cut to Hong Ran in her ladies' club knitting hats for children in Africa. One of the women notes how good she knots despite the fact that she has no children. She says it's because of her granddaughter, but you can see the unease of the conversation. Back to Yu Ra, who finds something very interesting about Hong Ran's past. While she was in New York, she delivered a baby. *gasp* What!? She figures this is why Hong Ran has been persistent in throwing Moon Soo out, to make room for her own child. The cut to David looking sad at work. He's not sick or terminally ill so what's wrong? Withdrawal symptoms from getting over Bo Tong.
Over at Ma Te's, Bo Tong gives him the sales report from their last broadcast. She's wondering what he's going to do now, he reminds her he's starting a company. She's not sure if this will work since David is still employed by MG, Duk Saeng isn't talented, and he's only the president in title. She wants to scout David, but Ma Te tells her that they need something to make him want to leave his job. They'll just wait until he comes himself. Bo Tong sighs that he's right, she wouldn't even do that. She's then told to look into office space. She looks around all day for a place then she's comes home very tired. It seems as if David was waiting for her. She says her legs hurt since she walked about a a quarter of Seoul. This upsets David because she didn't have to do all of that and she never ate. Meanwhile we see Ma Te putting on his facial mask guessing Bo Tong would be dragging herself home right about now. David calls him and correctly guesses he's using a face pack. Haha! David just tells asks if he wants to properly thank Bo Tong.
Later we see that an office space has been found and we see that Ma Te has bought a necklace as he's praising himself for the purchase. Bo Tong comes in and gives him a homemade name plate, he laughs and tells her it's childish. She then gives David a similar one with him being Team Leader, David says he likes it and Ma Te wonders when he got that title. Bo Tong says she scouted him and he's team leader now. David tells him that regardless of title, they need more people for the next round because it's hard enough with just him and Bo Tong doing the work. Bo Tong tells him it's okay since Ma Te is only president in title. Hahaha Maybe this is a running joke with them both. She isn't lying, Ma Te may be president but he does nothing to really contribute. He's 100% relying on them and his face. Yu Ra comes by and it seems David knows her, he wonders how she knows Ma Te. She's bought Ma Te a custom name plate and this doesn't go unnoticed by Bo Tong who takes hers from his desk. Ma Te asks for something warm, but Yu Ra declines since she's not staying long. In Joong calls Ma Te, but he ignores though she texts him anyways telling(more like warning) him not to make enemies and the connection that helped you can pull you down. He's been avoiding her, but Yu Ra warns that not even she can help him out of In Joong's web. She informs him that the chairman has gone to New York for surgery and anything goes wrong then they'll both be ruined.
David and Bo Tong go to buy coffee for Yu Ra and Ma Te. David asks how they know each other and bo Tong hilariously imitate how Yu Ra introduced herself the first time. By the time they return, she's leaving. She notices David and this doesn't go unnoticed by Ma Te. David's phone rings and the worm mother stands out, it's Bo Tong's mom who is asking for directions to their house. She's been calling David directly for a while. Bo Tong's mom and little bro have come to visit i.e. be nosy and see if Bo Tong was lying about where she lives. Duk Saeng pops up and is introduced as the other dorm mate. Meanwhile Ma Te is puzzled by David's relationship with Bo Tong's mom.
Bo Tong's mom made them dinner and David is throwing our the compliments saying her food is a work of art, Dae Shik wonders if he's doing too much but Bo Tong asks why he wore his flower belt. According to him it's a limited edition. David tells Mom she should open up a soondae restaurant in Seoul since there aren't many of them there. Dae Shik thinks it's a good idea. He even offers for them to stay the night since it's late, but Bo Tong wants them gone. They're also very fascinated with the fact that the house is in David's name. Then we see Ma Te peeking over the gate, huffy over them laughing and having fun. He ends up calling the police about a noise complaint. He drives off when the police arrive. Really, dude? Mad because you weren't invited.
Before bed, Mom wonders why David doesn't sleep inside and thinks it's because Bo Tong is here. She shakes her head saying he did that before, he calls it glamping. I love how Dae Shik takes this so seriously and is really thinking it over. Bo Tong tells Mom she sells socks and then mom is also surprised it's David's, but Bo Tong accidentally lets it slip that it's Ma Te's company. Oops. Dae Shik then takes off the sheet on the wall to reveal that gigantic picture of Ma Te who is at home angrily eating his ramyun in jealousy over not eating the good food. He calls Bo Tong asking her about a nonexistent assignment. He fusses that she was too busy being noisy and she wonders how he knew that. Almost caught.
Next day, Bo Tong and David are eating when she sees a sign that says the restaurant won't reuse food. She hasn't touched her food and thinks it's waste. David tells her there's a fine line between waste and what can be reused. It's recycling. It's time for the new products to be shown to Ma Te. David says like the socks, they can take something and make a new use for it. First item up in Sink Noodles. he video of him demonstrating is so funny, Ma Te asks if that will make people lose their appetite. Next product is an older cell phone set. They explain that they can buy up older phones that are thrown out and sell them as a set so people can take their anger out on them instead of their current ones. Last item is reused food sold at a low price instead of throwing it out. Bo Tong and David are high fiving each other and Ma Te is annoyed. Later on he's alone and thinking about In Joong and her fear aka gossip.
Next thing we know he's a restaurant with her that she's always at. The women from her club come in and catch them looking intimate well him with his hand on hers with her looking sort of detached. In Joong goes into work and is told one of her biggest contracts just cancelled. She knows Ma Te did it on purpose and congratulates him on using his brain. She says she helped him now it's his turn. She wants him to start a scandal with Myo Mi who just happens to be scandal free despite her top star status.
