Pretty Man/Bel Ami Episode 3 Recap
Here we are at episode 3 and the subs came out faster than I originally thought they would which is great for someone who can only understand like 20% of what is actually going on.
One thing I do enjoy about this drama, is how the plot is not as shallow as it appears. It's not just about a pretty guy because it's very obvious he actually has a conscience and you can see his guilt through certain scenes that maybe he doesn't exactly like how his life is going.
Episode 3

Meanwhile Ma Te is at home thinking about the rent for the shop, it's $3000 for the month. Ma Te you really are naive, aren't you?
David takes Bo Tong to what she thinks is like a bed and breakfast, but it turns out to be his house. He says he lives in the tent in the backyard while the house is a storage place. He was hesitant to say anything because he thought she'd think he was weird, but she says no. As they're eating, she tells him why she's trying to sell the socks. You can see his heart drop a little when she mentions it's for an oppa she likes. David is a MD for the cleaning and household products department. Ma Te calls and she gets up to leave. David gives her a ride and she promises to treat him next time when they exchange numbers. When Ma Te comes to pick her up, I can already feel the sadness David feels when he sees her excited to see her oppa.
After a while Ma Te questions her about that strange car she got out of and she says he bought something from her and she saw him when she was cleaning a car. She then says it's like looking in a mirror, she feels like he's the male version of her. Ma Te says that she shouldn't hitch rides from guys in Seoul, they're dangerous. Bo Tong quips that he's more dangerous then acts like she didn't say anything when he looks at her. His reason for calling this time: He wants her to sell his watch and get no less than $4000 since it cost him $6000 ( Though I imagine Jaek Hee bought it). As he's waiting outside and randomly posing for the women who pass by, Bo Tong comes out and yells that they won't give that much and he'll get $3000 at most. He's embarrassed and drives off, leaving her. He's waiting at a restaurant for Jaek Hee, who is late due to her latest buy. He says that he understands her work, but he's tired of waiting. She can take it all, house and car. He then walks out. She's sitting there calling after him. You're a serious pro, dude. As she's sitting alone, Jaek Hee looks at her watch that she bought from Electric Fairy who said that as long as she wears it, his heart will belong to her. Then we see Jaek Hee sitting in front of Electric Fairy telling her she's marrying Ma Te. Miss Fairy says it's too fast and marriage isn't what she meant.
We then hear the Fairy's thoughts: If a millionaire proposes, what bastard will say no? Then she thinks to herself that she still has lots of talismans to sell. She blurts out that if Jaek Hee goes ahead with the wedding, her money will begin to leak.
Bo Tong meets Ma Te at the store and hands him an envelop with $3208, he asks if she sold the watch and she says no, it's money she saved up to buy him a car, but he already has one now. He looks like he's reluctant to take it, he promises to pay her back as soon as they make money. However, later on when she's setting up the store, 2 men enter and demand the rent saying she owes 3 months worth of rent. Bo Tong insists that they already paid the owner, but one asks how when the owner is standing in front of her. She says they paid the man who was there previously, the men call that ahjussi a conman. They attempt to take everything down, but Bo Tong fights to stop them. Afterwards, she's apologizing to Ma Te for things gone wrong, but he says why when he's the one who was naive about it all. He notices she's cut her forehead in the process and helps her into the car - all with Yu Ra watching who's simply saying he's suffered a lot.
That night Jaek Hee stops by Ma Te's place and proposes to him promising that he'll live in luxury the rest of his life. He calls Yu Ra to tell her the news, she's not happy and tells him that he's still very immature and doesn't know what real money is. She then says Jaek Hee won't marry him and he thinks she's jealous. Yu Ra warns him that the warehouse of socks will always be there as a reminder of his failure.
Yu Ra's ex-hubby is sitting in his office when Hong Ran comes in. It's very obvious they don't get along and he tells her that the next time she wants to stop him from attending a meeting then send someone who's actually his type. Her smile fades a little, but she plays it off like she has no idea what he's talking about. He's not dumb and knows what she's up to. Afterwards, in her own office she comments that he's going through puberty now. Wow She's upset that he's not her puppet anymore.
Yu Ra's daughter is having a birthday party and Yu Ra is watching from the sidelines. Hong Ran comes in and bitter words are exchanged. Yu Ra says that she's the one who sent Ma Te to her office, but she guesses that she knows that since she knows Hong Ran has people following.
The next day (I'm guessing), Ma Te is getting dressed for a day out with Jaek Hee. While walking in the park and he wonders if she's going to be happy. She says as long as she has him. He suggests that they go register their marriage. Jake Hee is happy.

During lunch he says don't bring up the socks anymore and drops the bomb that he's getting married. She's stunned into silence, but manages to ask about his fiancee since he's never talked about her. She asks him if he loves her, but figures it's about money. He gives her back the money she lent him explaining that the she owns at least 10 buildings. He admits to not knowing whether he loves her, but asks what about love. She smiles and tells him to be happy and she'll try to do the same and uses her working hard for that money as an example of her being happy. He looks a little guilty, but hides it.
Cue to Bo Tong walking in her room crying. She sits at her desk and looks at a picture of a male model in a suit and says Ma Te is going to look handsome in a tuxedo and bow ties don't suit him. Hahaha, what?! She then says come to your senses.
That same day, Jaek Hee gets a disturbing call regarding a building she has just acquired then she remembers Electric Fairy's warning about her money leaking. Then she takes Ma Te to meet the fairy since she asked to meet him. He's skeptical and scoffing because she's young. Electric Fairy tells him not to close the door because a beauty is coming in and then says it's alright Mother is in here already. Miss Fairy tells Jaek Hee she needs to speak with him along and she agrees walking out. Ma Te sits down and says he's doing this only for Jaek Hee and Electric Fairy laughs at that statement. She asks him if the whole world seems easy to him and he says no because then people like her would starve. When Jaek Hee is alone with her, Electric Fairy says that her heart must be wavering from judging her face. She knows she doesn't want to let him go despite her warning. Then she guesses that a large amount is already lost, Jake Hee is shocked and then vents out her frustrations about what she has to pay in taxes. Electric Fairy says this billion is the beginning, if she marries Ma Te she'll be known as a very successful business woman, but not before she loses her money first. She also guesses Jaek Hee loves money more than Ma Te.
In the car on the way back, Jaek Hee tells Ma Te to remind her to take her cactus with her. He says it's cheap, but she actually paid $10,000 for it because Miss Fairy said it wards off bad luck..well most of it anyway. She then wants to know how much Ma Te loves her, she starts off by talking about her money then he looks at her asking what she's saying. Ma Te doesn't see the truck ahead of them and they collide, Jaek Hee throws herself over Ma Te in order to protect him. The car spins before stopping. At the hospital, he asks why she did that. She says she loves him more than her own life, but she realized that she loves money even more than that. She asks for them to break up.
At home, Ma Te is thinking about Jaek Hee's reasons for saying she loves money more than life: When she was younger she didn't have the looks or money so therefore she was ignored and looked down upon. When she earned her money, she began to be treated differently. People wished her happy birthday and wanted to eat with her. She tells him what Electric Fairy told her about losing her fortune, but eventually gaining more back if they married, but she doesn't want to go back to who she was before her money. She asks him if he has the confidence to stay with her if she were to lose it all and he can't answer her. He calls Yu Ra and tells her he knows what real money is: "Money is a living being. If you bring it up with care it will grow well, but if it grows too big then it can consume you". Yu Ra tells him now that he understands, money won't consume him the way it did Jaek Hee. She tells him his next mission is to learn to control people's minds. He looks confused, but when we see her she's sitting across from Electric Fairy.
