Drama Review: Surplus Princess Episode 5
From unemployment woes to being stood up, it seems this episode was all about expectation versus reality and boy how harsh can reality be.
We saw more to Jin Ah, I can't call it nicer..maybe vulnerable? I don't know, whatever it is I am happy with her for helping Shi Kyung with that cooking class. It was something she didn't have to do, but I guess her liking Shi Kyung made her do it. Although if she didn't have feelings for him, would she have done the same? I'm inclined to think yes since he is her boss, but then again no since she had no obligation to help him especially if she felt nothing for him. Hye Young's reading for her was extremely telling and it does show she takes something like that seriously. It's interesting to see that the reading said she'll have something to help her, but it can also harm her. I have this feeling she's going to use Shi Kyung's illness to her advantage and will throw away Hye Young's warning that it's a double-edged sword that can also aid in her downfall. Someone who used the perfect opportunity to 'stalk' her boss and breakup with her boyfriend will most likely do anything get what she wants because it was very obvious she was affected by how easily Ha Ni gained Shi Kyung's attention.
Ha Ni is slowly figuring out how to truly live like a human, but when the end goal is true love, the road to get there can be full of heartbreak. I won't get into who I actually ship her with because it's all a matter of perspective (and that's a subject I could probably post a separate article about). Right now she's head over heels in love with Shi Kyung so he's all she's thinking about thus her end goal is to get into JH Foods in order to spend more time with him. It's foo proof right? Well her road to get there hasn't been so smooth, she's learning that getting a job isn't so easy and she needs to work for it. I think that's what I'm more excited and interested in right now, her challenges and learning experiences while attempting to become human. Although she should probably listen to Ahn Ma Nyeo when he tells her to stop drinking. she nearly told her secret. Thankfully Hye Young was there to stop her. I just have this feeling that Ha Ni will see that what she thinks she wants isn't exactly what she thought she needed and that'll mean that Shi Kyung isn't her one true love, but perhaps a stepping stone to who she's meant to be with. It can be Hyun Myung whom we've seen far more of than Shi Kyung and that does mean he is main lead who is meant to end up with Princess Aileen.
Speaking of Hyun Myung, he is a very interesting character. So far we see he doesn't have the typical sad background like every other male lead and he isn't exactly arrogant or mean, but he is that character you can see yourself or a friend in. He's relatable and you can come to really feel for him. Whereas you do feel for Shi Kyung due to his disability, but he's not exactly relatable in that way, but it depends on the viewer. However, some could view his vulnerability as being something to relate to since he has been hiding this secret for so long because he's either embarrassed or doesn't want to seem inadequate for his position.
Speaking of someone feeling inadequate, this episode really shed light on what long term unemployment feels like and how much it can hurt someone. Ji Yong was forced to lie to his college hoobae, who had gotten a job before him, because he was too embarrassed to admit he was still jobless. You were able to see his emotions and how much he truly wanted to achieve something that he could brag about, but was unable to do because of his self admitted online game addiction. It's obvious he wants to do well, but is unable to. I would like to know why he went to law school, is it because that's what he wanted or was it to please his parents? He's now in his thirties and being unemployed isn't something to be proud of for him so I guess studying for JH Foods probably gives him some purpose so he doesn't feel like a complete failure. If all he's good at is gaming then being a pro gamer could do something he's really good at and enjoy it.
This episode we found the share housemates all banding together to make money and to show they are worthy enough to get a job in a top company, but it also showed that no matter what friendship always comes first for them.
