A Hundred Years' Inheritance/Legacy(백년의 유산): Episode 12 Recap

   

                                                           Episode 12 

  Previously on A Hundred Year's Inheritance, Hyo Dong was talking to Choon Hee about the letter he wrote when 2 officers walk up and tell him that he's being arrested as a suspect for a fire on a building he was working on. He, of course, doesn't understand what's going on and says he's innocent. They read him his rights and attempt to take him away, but he refuses saying he knows nothing about that fire. Choon Hee chimes in asking how they can take away an innocent person, they threaten her with obstruction of justice if she gets in the way of them arresting him. Again, the officers attempt to take him away but Hyo Dong wriggles out of their grasp. He assures Choon Hee that he'll be fine and everything will be okay.

He says he'll go, but he refuses to be arrested like the criminal he isn't. He gets in the car without being handcuffed and repeatedly reassures Choon Hee that it's all just a misunderstanding. He's driven away and Choon Hee is left trying to figure out what to do next while she picks up his hard hat that he dropped.

     Meanwhile, Chae Won has gotten wind of her father's arrest and is worried about him. Chul Gyu tells her that everything will be okay once he gets more information he'll let her know what's going on. He tells his mother that he's going to figure out what's going on and fix it, she nods. ChaeWon comes down saying that she's going to see her dad at the police department. Young Ja looks pleased with herself over ChaeWon's father being arrested. Chae Won takes a taxi and the news is on the radio. A short circuit caused the fire and there were no serious injuries other than the manager being burned that were reported. She tells the driver to hurry up as she's worried about her father. 

     At the noodle factory, Pyong Dal is teaching them about noodles and how much care it takes to go into it. Kang Sook speaks up and compares her experience with her restaurant saying that maybe the love she put into her products. DoHee says that she's always talking about that and asks why she quit if it was doing so well. Kang Sook says that she came to help with the family's business. Pyong Dal looks pleased with what she had said though. At that moment, Choon Hee comes running in and is out of breath. Ki Choon and Ki Moon are fascinated by her appearance and make no efforts in hiding it to the displeasure of their wives. She tells them that Hyo Dong has been arrested and is at the police station. They ask why and she tells them it's because of a fire that happened at a building he was working on.  Pyong Dal passes out at the news so his 3 kids take him into the house leaving Kang Sook and Do Hee alone with Choon Hee who looks worried. Still upset over their husbands gawking over her, they ask her how she knows their brother-in-law and she says he's a customer of hers at her cafe. They eye her up and down and say that she isn't his type, but then remind themselves that he is a man. Choon Hee tells them they sound unpleasant and begins to defend herself saying that it's not like a massage parlor or anything. Then Kang Sook thinks that she's clinging to Hyo Dong because of the 10 million and Do Hee quickly covers her mouth from saying anything and tells her to leave now. They mock her for how she's walking. Do Hee scolds Kang Sook for spilling about the inheritance saying that it might make her cling even more. Outside the gates, Choon Hee notices how most of the women in that family are aggressive and feels sorry for him. 

  If the other women are like that well Ki Ok isn't overpowering or aggressive at all, so I wonder what his wife was like. This family is crazy, Pyong Dal doesn't deserve children like them at all. Hyo Dong is the only one who stayed by his side for 30 years and helped in that factory, he's the only one who deserves that inheritance but he's the only one who isn't money hungry either. 

     At the police station, Hyo Dong is being questioned about the fire and his position working there. He says that he was in charge and replaced the old wires with new ones and he changed the circuit breaker himself even testing it a few times to make sure everything was okay. The officer asks him if he locked up after he was done, Hyo Dong says yes that he gave the key to the manager when he locked it up. The officer tells him that the fire was caused by a cut wire on the breaker and is he sure no one came in after him saying that it broke all on its own if that's the case. Before he could try and explain, Chae Won comes in. He says sorry for making her worry and tells her it's just a misunderstanding and to go home. Then Ki Choon and Ki Moon come in looking for him, they ask him what's going on and even he doesn't know what's happened. He asks about their parents and they tell him that their father is in bed and the house upside down by the news of this. He tells them to never let their parents come because he doesn't want to let them see him like this. They turn their attention to the officer and ask him what happened. He says that they're investigating a fire at the warehouse that Hyo Dong was in charge of that was possibly caused by occupational negligence  the manager was burned in the fire. Hyo Dong didn't know that someone was injured and this makes him feel worse. He says that he checked the breaker and ran a test run before leaving to make sure it was fine. 

     Chul Gyu is in his office on the phone with their attorney telling him to settle with the victim and that they'll pay them whatever they want. Chae Won walks in the office and she tells him that her father is traumatized from this all, he's frustrated because his mom isn't there to handle this. He tells her for some reason the victim won't settle and the insurance company is acting up as well. She offers to meet with the victim, but he tells her it probably won't do any good since Attorney Kim was unsuccessful himself. He then mumbles about Hyo Dong not doing his job right, but realizes his mistake and apologizes to her. She tells him it's not her dad's fault since he had checked it before he left. Chul Gyu randomly wonders if someone set a fire on purpose after everyone was gone. 

     Se Yoon is at work when his mother calls to have lunch with him, but we see that they won't be alone because JuRi is also there. JuRi tells Seol Ju about Se Yoon's offer to date her when he's ready to, but Seol Ju says that's pretty much official(Umm No it isn't). Then his big-mouthed mother tells her what Se Yoon had said days earlier, if he should love again then loving Ju Ri would make the most sense and you can see how happy she is by this news. When he gets there, he's shocked to see Ju Ri there as well but allows her to stay since she was there before him. He notices how happy she is and his mother tells him that she told her what he had said. You can tell that he's not exactly happy about hearing that, especially when she says that she hopes that they turn out well together. Then her phone rings and immediately she looks at Se Yoon(?) because it's Choon Hee, Ju Ri asks if she's going to pick it up and Seol Ju makes up some excuse about her getting spam calls lately.(Oh goodness this scene was odd. He obviously said he would think about it, doing so doesn't make her his girlfriend. Starting to not like his mother too much either) Choon Hee is getting frustrated because Seol Ju isn't answering her phone and she needs help then Kang Jin walks in and wants to exchange New Years presents. Choon Hee says she doesn't have anything to give, but he says that's okay and puts a bag on the table. She thinks he's flirting with her again and repeats that she doesn't have any feelings for him whatsoever. She takes the box out of the bag while he brags that he picked it out for her, but it says 'Geumchongdong Community Center' and knows he's giving it to her because he doesn't want it. He lies and says that he didn't see that since he doesn't have his reading glasses on then says that he doesn't need body wash and stuff when he only uses soap. Then he reveals the real reason for him giving it to her, he wants to trade that for 10 cans of beer. She's not in the best mood so she agrees and tells him to get it himself, he asks for a soda as well and she agrees. He says she's being generous maybe because it's that time of the year. 

         The family is gathered in Pyong Dal & Kkeut Soon's room since he's not feeling well due to Hyo Dong's arrest. They acknowledge how well he's doing at the police station, much better than they imagined. Ki Moon says that Chul Gyu is busy trying to settle it all, Ki Choon says he was working on that building as a favor to Chae Won's in-laws. Ki Ok mentions that the victim won't settle, but Ki Choon says it's to get more money so they will have a settlement in the end. Kkeut Soon says that if it's about money then it's no problem they can just sell part of the wheat field to get the money. Everyone becomes restless at these words and Do Hee speaks up by saying that it's not like taffy and you can't just a piece at a time, Kang Sook chimes in saying that it will be hard to sell the rest later. Ki Choon says that Chae Won's in-laws are rich so no one should worry since her husband is working on it. Chae Won assures them all that things will get settled then gets up to leave. What the fuck? Sorry for my language but Chae Won's family is so damn selfish. Your brother-in-law aka the man your sister married just got arrested and none of you want to sell a piece of that land to help him out? Last I checked, he was the one who helped your parents financially and was always there for them when none of you wanted to be around. He even offered to give money to bail Do Hee out of jail when she was arrested for fraud. They are the worst kids ever and don't deserve parents like they have. 

           Young Ja comes into the kitchen to eat lunch, the housekeeper apologizes for it being delayed and walks off after she doesn't want salt. Young Ja starts eating the soup and blurts out "It's hot!" within earshot of the housekeeper who gets excited at the thought of her possibly speaking again. Young Ja realizes her mistake and goes back to moaning and making noises. Chae Won comes in and apologizes in her dad's place then reassures her that Chul Gyu is working everything out so she shouldn't worry. She gives off a look like she could care less and it seems that Chae Won notices how she's looking around. We get the news that the victim still won't settle so Hyo Dong can't get out of jail. Chul Gyu is upset and says that they'll give them whatever amount of money they want, but Attorney Kim says that it's not the money so they won't settle. Chul Gyu wants to know why they won't and Attorney Kim looks equally puzzled at this question, but knows it's a reason behind it. 

     Hyo Dong is sitting in the holding cell and is sighing to himself over and over again, sorry for possibly causing Chae Won a problem with her in-laws. He still doesn't know how any of this happened. Meanwhile Choon Hee is going crazy because there seems to be nothing she can do, she calls Seol Ju but her phone is turned off. So she does the only thing she can think of and she goes to see Dong Kyu herself. When she walks in, he's happy to see her and wonders how she's been. He tells her that she looks the same and she replies that the same goes for him, though he jokes he's now a white haired man. She tells him she's thankful he's greeting her nicely because she didn't think he would, but he says how could he not when she was like a sister to his wife. She hesitates to ask, but she tells him she needs a difficult favor from him. As she's getting on the elevator we see Se Yoon walk right past her without seeing her which gives the thought that he's not suppose to see her or there is some kinds of birth secret. He's there to meet his father who wants to him go to Paju Police Department with their attorney. 

   Cut to Chae Won making medicine or whatever in the kitchen when the housekeeper suddenly tells her that the president has been acting strange lately. Chae Won asks what it is and is told what had happened earlier that day during lunch, but Chae Won initially shrugs it off as impossible. The ahjumma then tells her that she sometimes hears her on the phone in her room as well, but then wonders to herself if that was the tv. Chae Won looks worried at this news, but her thoughts are cut short when Chul Gyu comes home. He looks frustrated and tired as he tells her that the victim still won't settle. He thought it was more money, but that doesn't seem to be it and he doesn't know what it is. Chae Won says how can he say it so lightly then he yells what is he suppose to do, but apologizes for the outburst. She apologizes if she's irritating him, but he assures her that's not it he's just too sensitive right now. They go in to see his mom who is still "aphasic" and writes down about the settlement, he tells her that it isn't going so well and they aren't settling. He says that he is going to visit the victim himself the next day so she shouldn't worry, but she gives a heavy sigh. He apologizes to her and realizes how much of an impact she has on his life. She pats him on his shoulder while whining. Chae Won still looks suspicious and the background music shows her worries. 

      Hyo Dong is sitting in his cell when he receives a visitor and is surprised to see Choon Hee standing in front of him. She says that she stopped by because she was worried from him being arrested. He reassures her that he's okay and there aren't any problems, she asks if his family came since she told them about everything. He tells her yes and his daughter even came bay, Choon Hee says that she must have been worried and he nods yes. He tells her that even though he told her not to cry, she did anyways and Chae Won has always been such a kind person so he feels bad causing her some pain. She asks if he thought about her since he's been in there and he says he has and says sorry for surprising her. She asks why he always has to be apologetic to her since there's nothing to be sorry, but asks if he's eaten. He says excitedly that the detectives ordered him some stew, but Choon Hee says that radish kimchi would have been good with that. 

She tells him that she trusts him and reminds him how she came by to fix something in her cafe in ten minutes so she knows his skills and knows that he can't be careless and start a fire. He looks happy and thanks her for believing him, but she brushes it off saying that he's a regular and and host of that cafe she should be doing this.(I don't know how many bar owners visit their regulars in jail and help them hire lawyers, but whatevs lol) The officer comes to tell her that visiting hours are over and he thanks her for coming, she assures him that everything will be okay so he can sleep peacefully. When she turns around to leave, he tells her to be safe and to lock her doors. She looks so happy, but turns around says that he's in no position to tell her to be safe so he shouldn't worry. Then she tells him her name, I totally forgot he didn't know her name and has been calling her Madame Yang this whole time. It's a cute scene they look like 2 teenagers. 

     As she's coming out, she notices Chae Won coming in and stops to talk to her. She says she's her dad's friend and mentions she runs a cafe in town. Choon Hee just casually says she just saw her dad and she's heard a lot about her from him. Chae Won still looks a bit uneasy, but Choon Hee tells her to be strong for her dad and not to show him her weak side. She also tells her that she has a friend who owns large company and he's agreed to help so everything will work out. She advises her to smile no matter what. It's quite a touching scene between them because we all know that Choon Hee will marry Hyo Dong sometime in this show, she's already being a bit maternal towards her. 

   We then see Pyong Dal coming out of his room and is dressed to go see Hyo Dong, but everyone stops him because of the promise they made to their brother-in-law about not allowing either parent to see him like that. Kkeut Soon is in the kitchen making dinner and crying about Hyo Dong being in jail, she'd rather die than see him locked up like that. 

   The officer gives Chae Won something hot to drink and informs her that the best way to have him released is to have the victim reach a settlement before the case is taken to the District Attorney. We find out the victim is an employee of the company and Chae Won says that he refuses to settle. Then Se Yoon and Attorney Park come in looking for the officer in charge of the case. Se Yoon is surprised to see her there and is informed that she's Min Hyo Dong's daughter. They all meet with Hyo Dong and he's told that his case might be hard to plea out of of considering the circumstances and he could face 1 or more years behind bars. Chae Won turns to her dad and he tells her that once the investigation is over, the truth will come out so she doesn't need to worry. Se Yoon wonders if there is no hope, but he's told the best way is for the victim to settle and they can get out of it by a fine to avoid jail time. Attorney Park says that he did stop by the hospital and says the victim doesn't want to settle for some reason and asks if Hyo Dong has a bad relationship with the guy and he doesn't since the are total strangers. Se Yoon brings up the point that the victim is also an employee and Keum Myung Foods which is her mother-in-law's company and wonders what reason they have for not settling. After the meeting, Chae Won notes how they're always meeting up like this and he jokes that he must be like Superman since they always see each other when she's in trouble. She asks him how he knew about this and he tells her that a woman who is like a sister to his mother told his father about this, she remembers Choon Hee telling her about whats he had done. He jokes with her about taking the bus, but she says she's exhausted and asks him for a ride. During the ride she's trying to hold back her tears and he tells her that Attorney Park will solve things so she shouldn't worry. Instead of taking her home, he drives to the river and tells her to cry it out before she gets sick then hands her his handkerchief. He gets out to give her some privacy and she can no longer hold it in and begins to bawl her eyes out.

 He turns around and sees how hard she's crying wondering where she's been hiding this all. When they reach her house, she thanks him for like the thousandth time and he tells her to wash and iron his handkerchief before giving it back. He says that she should think of her father before moving abroad because it seems like they're very close. And then he says don't worry for what seems like the hundredth time someone has said that in this episode. She randomly says that his girlfriend must be very happy to have a warm and caring boyfriend like him, but he wonders where she got that from. She simply says it popped into her head suddenly. Chae Won gets out of the car and she watches as he drives off. 

      When she walks inside, Chul Gyu asks if she's just now coming back from the police station and she says yes. He tells her that his mother fell asleep worrying and she nods before walking upstairs. He stops her asking if she thinks she's a little too much, he knows she's out of place due to her father but his mother is a patient and she hasn't even seen how she's doing. Chae Won then asks how she's doing, but he isn't buying her attitude and notices how cold she is. He says that he knows they haven't gotten along, but if you think about it she's in that state because of them. She asks if he's gone back to being a mama's boy and he says she's trying her hardest to fix their relationship, but Chae Won says she's tired. He says that she even handed over the construction job to her father in order to mend the relationship and she pauses at that sentence. It all becomes clear to her that this is all his mother's doing and he has no idea what she's talking about. She storms into Young Ja's room and says that this was all in her plans and how could she do that to her father. Young Ja still can't "talk" and looks "confused" when Chul Gyu comes in. She begins to cry and point at Chae Won, who accuses her of planning this and pretending to not being able to speak. 

Then Chul Gyu slaps her in the face scaring Ju Ri and Young Ja, telling her that she's gone crazy and wants her to apologize. He goes to hit her again before his sister intervenes asking him to calm down and not use violence. Young Ja begins screaming and throwing a fit leaving Chul Gyu and Ju Ri to calm her down. 

       Se Yoon comes home late and his mother asks where he's been, he tells her he was in Paju with Attorney Park. He tells her that Choon Hee stopped by the office today to get some help for a friend that was arrested. She asks if he's seen her, but he says no that she wasn't at the station. Seol Ju is upset and calls Choon Hee, when she answers cheerfully Seol Ju asks what her intentions were for going to see her husband behind her back. Choon Hee lightly says that she's talking weird, but it seems that Seol Ju doesn't here anything even though she says she has no intentions. Seol Ju asks what her reasons are for being around her and Choon Hee wonders if she's drunk, but she isn't having it harshly asking why she came back to Korea and what were reasons are for seeing her son and husband. Choon Hee tells her that she hadn't answered her phone all day and seeing him was the only thing she could think of. But nevertheless, she apologizes for doing without her permission. She says she thought a lot about it and didn't know she'd act this way for that, but assures her that she's never seen her son so don't blame her for something she hasn't done. Seol Ju says sorry, but she doesn't want Choon Hee around her family. Even though was happened was a long time ago, she still has scars from what happened at the orphanage. Every time she sees her she thinks of her hurtful past and she doesn't want her family to remember what happened then either. Choon Hee says she guesses that's why she tried to get her to go back to the US and she gets it, from now on she'll pretend as if they don't know each other. After they hang up, Seol Ju cries and tells Choon Hee to not forgive her. Choon Hee realizes that's the reason behind Seol Ju trying to give her money. 

         In his cell. Hyo Dong is smiling to himself thinking about Choon Hee's visit. Pyong Dal and Kkeut Soon are laying in bed thinking about him, trying not to worry about it. They think about the past 30 years and how he was like their son after their daughter passed away. Kkeut Soon even says that he's done more than their actual kids have done for them. 

 Kang Jin is doing a ceremony in his home for his parents and he apologizes for not being married like he's suppose to. He promises he'll get married by the end of the year to the first woman he sees. He goes outside and wonders if Choon Hee will come outside so he knocks on the door asking her to come out, but she doesn't. She sits up and picks up Hyo Dong's hard hat that he had dropped and thinks of him. Kang Jin is walking and runs into Ki Ok who is looking for her mom. She says goodbye after he says that he hasn't seen her. As she runs away, he remembers the promise he made to his parents and realizes the woman is Ki Ok. She runs and finds her mother on her way to visit Hyo Dong with some food. He's speaking with an officer who wishes that the victim would just settle when Kkeut Soon and Ki Ok come in. He tells her that food isn't allowed, but she begs and says that he's her son-in-law and this is the only thing she can do. He okays it and sets the food in front of him and tells him to eat, this breaks him down. 

     Chae Won goes to visit the victim at the hospital to see if they would settle and says that Young Ja told her to have them settle. The wife says that the president called them and told them not to settle no matter what. Chae Won gets home and Young Ja is sitting in the living room, she tells her that she's won and gets on her knees. Chae Won says that she can have her son back with no conditions if she releases her father. Young Ja turns around and looks very pleased with herself. End.
