T-Drama Review: When I See You Again Episode 20 (Finale)
Well here we are at the finale, while I did like how we got closure, the ending seemed rushed and it could have gone smoother either with an extra episode or if some things were resolved earlier.
I won't get into details about Yan Ze being all crazy and desperate to get the phone back, that scene was rather over the top for me, but it was effective. It actually proved An Xi's point about Yan Ze's feelings for Ya En being real and he chose her over that phone in the end. In my opinion, his change came too late since I wanted to see the effects of that for at least an episode. They stretched this obstacle too long when it should have been resolved at least in episode 18 so we could see him repair his mistakes in 19 then see the end results in 20. I know I seem like I'm complaining, but I felt they rushed over his redemption. We had 20 episodes, nothing really should have been glossed over. What did I like? I did like how he ended up with Ya En. I read some teeny spoilers about the novel and let's just say I prefer the drama's ending to our couple, I didn't like heartbroken Ya En. I've always rooted for them as a couple so I'm happy they got a happy ending.
I feel similar about Yong Qing's situation and I was vocal in previous reviews about how they handled her story. It seems like once she resolved her feelings for You Qian and she found out the truth about her boyfriend, they showed her less and less. Mei Wen & Zhi Lin got more screen time and she was shown far more in the beginning. After a while, it felt like they didn't know how to stick her into the story after she was no longer needed as an antagonist when they had so many opportunities to show her growth. I'm glad she was so forgiving towards her brother and godmother, but they really could have done more to show us this side of her. It was nice to see her use what Ya Lu taught her as a way to show Luna how much she really loved her as well as reminding Ya En that her brother was just worried about her. This side of her could have been utilized far more than it did and that's what is disappointing.
Not much else was disappointing, just predictable. We knew You Qian and An Xi would be end game, I did appreciate how they never had them separate for a long time after they confirmed their feelings. They did have obstacles, but much of whatever issues they had were internal and were up to them to solve - which they did. I know some viewers weren't happy with An Xi's forgiving personality, but that's what made her..her and it was consistent which was nice. She may have been a 'glass half full' girl, but she was able to see reality and modified her own beliefs per situation. I did curse her for taking that phone, but her point was proven and Yan Ze really did love Ya En. You Qian falling in love (again) with An Xi didn't change his ability to see things for what they were. He may have been a fool for his girlfriend, but he was still his realistic and logical self, again it's the consistency that I thoroughly enjoyed about this series.
Even Luna's harder personality somewhat stayed until the end even though she became a better mother. I thought she was irredeemable, but alas I was wrong. Like Yan Ze and Yong Qing, I would have preferred they made her actual change early on so we could really see the effects from it. I'm glad she saw just how much she missed out on when raising An Xi and changed into a better mother and boss, it still seemed far too rushed even if we saw her getting emotional over 4 episodes.
Final Thoughts: Overall, I did enjoy this series and will miss my weekly Sunday show. I enjoyed most of the characters and always love consistency with them regardless of how I feel about them. I also lovd how we got an ending for each of our supporting characters, they were as much a part of the story as the main cast so it's nice that the writer remembered that. Do I recommend it? Yes, if you are looking for something that's light and if you love when a couple doesn't break up.
