Quick First Impression: Surplus Princess

tvN just premiered a new Thursday night drama called Surplus Princess or The Mermaid.which is about a mermaid princess who has just 100 days to make a human fall in love with her in order to stay that way. Another synopsis also mentioned her getting a job, but I guess the main plot is about her wanting to become human. Y'know, like "The Little Mermaid" written by Hans Christian Andersen or you can go off of Disney's 1989 film adaptation of the same name, which had a notably happier ending. Same story line, different ending. You choose.

Ha Ni (Jo Bo Ah) is the "surplus princess" or Memaid Princess who longs to be with the man she loves and she is given 100 days to do so or she returns back to her Mermaid life. The main she must make her love her is Lee Hyun Myung (Ohn Joo Wan) who is struggling to find a full time job to live comfortably. In all honesty, I thought Kwon Shi Kyung (Song Jae Rim) was the actual lead since Ha Ni had a crush on him and we know Yoon Jin Ah (Park Ji Soo) is also after him. It was a pleasant surprise to me to see that Hyun Myung is our hero since he just didn't seem to fit that type to me. I didn't know much about this drama so you can understand my confusion. The plot is a nice change away from some dramas we've been getting lately, but it's all about execution so I hope the writer takes advantage of the unique story line.

What I thought was pretty funny were the added notes we got to some scenes, mainly the introduction of the characters by Ha Ni especially her introduction especially Kim Seul Gi's character Ahn Hye Young. So far the acting is fine and I like how they chose to film some of the underwater scenes, namely that kiss we got. Boy was that unexpected and sort of hilarious. Now thinking back, the entire character setup and who is main lead actually makes sense now, but I was a bit confused when I read the synopsis after watching the episode.

So my thoughts so far? Pretty solid first episode and main plot setup with showing how Ha Ni is desperate to become human to meet Shi Kyung. I think it also shows her naivety and how she'll be extremely disappointed when she figures out who Shi Kyung really is which will make her fall for Hyun Myung instead. So in a way this will be sort of a test for her and it shall be exciting to see the hijinks that was ensue when she shows up in everyone's lives. The only bad part? It only airs once a week on Thursdays :(
