Drama Review: Surplus Princess Episode 3

Let the shenanigans begin! Now that Aileen has become Ha Ni, it's time to find true love, but it's not going to be as easy as she thought. In episode 3 we got to peak a little into Ahn Ma Nyeo's life as well as securing my extreme dislike for Jin Ah.

I have to start off by saying I have absolutely no idea who the main lead is anymore. Like Ohn Joo Wan was marketed as it, but now we're getting some signs that it may be Song Jae Rim. Episode 3 spent some time on Kwon Shi Kyung and what's going on with him. Apparently, he's been in an accident that leaves him unable to really recognize people, which is just weird and so on board to what a main lead is: Arrogant on the outside, but suffering with a painful back story on the inside. While Lee Hyun Myung is like the typical female lead with employment problems and terrible in the relationship department. I'm guessing I can still go off of a synopsis I read that stated Aileen/Ha Ni had to make Hyun Myung fall in love with her, but at the rate we're going it looks like she's still stuck on Shi Kyung, who oddly enough can't get her underwater kiss out of his head. So maybe it appears to be a "who will she choose?" type of deal. I, for one, am not super for that because I am still bitter about how the writer chose to deal with Yoon Yeon Seok's character in Answer Me 1994. Not that I'm upset he didn't get the girl, but his character was completely shafted and put to the side once the writer learned who the audience wanted to be the husband. I am hoping this writer already has an ending in mind and won't sway too much with viewer opinion if their ending doesn't match what others may want. However, based on the episode 4's preview, I think Ha Ni may fall for Hyun Myung. We shall see.
I let out a loud 'Finally!' when Jin Ah admitted to Hyun Myung her reasons for breaking up with him because I called it in episode 2, she used that incident as a reason since it would make her feel less guilty She has been so persistent to catch Shi Kyung that she's obviously missing the person who she had right in front of her. From her mother to her coworker, Jin Ah saw Hyun Myung's unemployment as an embarrassment. She eyed her prey (Shi Kyung) and is now going fter him, even though she's crying at the end of the episode after Hyun Myung gives her their pictures, I still don't think she's sorry. Sorry, but someone isn't conniving all this time only to just feel something after receiving pictures. Episode 4's preview shows this, she's still after Shi Kyung and will probably stop at nothing to get him unless she sees Ha Ni going after her ex then maybe she'll become jealous. I am praying to the dramagods that this happens.
We got a lot of Shi Kyung this episode, maybe just to truly setup our plot and get things in motion. I am glad we learned a little bit more about him and see that he isn't all he's cracked up to be and he's still hung up on that [HOT] underwater kiss with Princess Aileen. The fact that he asked Jin Ah about the pearl necklace was extremely telling, it showed he saw Aileen when he was being pulled out of the water. He was in an accident and it left him unable to recognize faces which explains why he never saw his sunbae while walking down the hall. Senior chef got upset, but poor Shi Kyung wasn't able to actually recognize him, but of course he can't tell anyone. This also explains why he will sometimes ask who someone is when they walk up to him, it's not that he doesn't know their names, but he can't see them.
I did like was how we saw into Ma Nyeo's life a little bit. His wife died and he's been working nonstop to support his daughter, his video chat with her was very heartbreaking. He doesn't want her to know how hard he's been working and tried to make it seem like he was at the sauna. I think this scene showed Ha Ni how hard humans have to work to support themselves, love and life aren't easy and I do hope she's starting to see this. I do want to get more into his life because it will be interesting to see why he wanted to become a human in the first place, was it to find love like Ha Ni or what? He seems to be a very important side character for me.
Who Ha Ni ends up with isn't super important as long as the writer properly tells the story and doesn't shaft any characters. I do find it interesting that she is so head over heels in love with Shi Kyung that I can't help but feel like they won't end up together. Maybe it'll be like the original story and the prince (Shi Kyung) chooses to be with someone else, but perhaps we get a twist and it'll be someone she wasn't counting on falling for (Hyun Myung). Aside from finding true love, I hope that Ha Ni also makes true friends during her mission. We know she's going to get a job soon and that'll help her out with her love search, but it will also help her learn more about humans and how it takes more than just love to be one. The end of episode 3 also showed a side effect of that potion: She gets her tail back whenever she's in water. Dun Dun Duuuunnnn!
On a side character note, anyone else think it's hilarious how Hye Young has been in love with Lee Soon Kyu? Hahaha
