My Thoughts So Far: Master's Sun

Official poster: SBS
As Wednesday comes upon us, I figured I should give my thoughts on this horror/romantic comedy. Even though we're only 4 episodes in, I have a good feeling about this.

Master's Sun or Sun of My Master centers around a woman, Tae Gong Shil, who sees ghosts and the man, Joo Joong Won, who is able to help shield her from those ghosts. Here's a more detailed synopsis from Wikepedia: Joo Joong Won (So Ji Sub) is the stingy and greedy CEO of major department store Kingdom. He meets the gloomy Tae Gong Shil (Gong Hyo Jin), who started seeing ghosts after an accident. Their lives take a new turn as they work together to deal with the terror and sadness brought about by the spirits.
I am shocked I actually like this drama because I am such a wimp when it comes to horror movies and anything related to the paranormal genre. Originally, I was attracted to this drama because of Gong Hyo Jin, I think she is a great actress and her teaming up with the Hong Sisters again made this a must watch for me. I have never seen So Ji Sub in a drama before, so I had no actual expectations for him. So far, he has portrayed his character great and I do see some similarities between his character and Cha Seung Won's Dokko Jin in Greatest Love, also co-starring Gong Hyo Jin. Even though Joong Won is a jerk, he's not totally unlikable. We're shown his story early on, I guess to show that he's not a jerk just for the hell of it. Dude has been through some stuff and we can see why he's so cold. Other dramas would usually drag out the male lead's blurry past, but the Hong Sisters wanted us to know why he is the way he is right away. I actually like this because we won't spend 10 or so episodes yelling at the screen, we can sympathize with him and his internal struggles. From being kidnapped as a teenager(his younger self played by L of Infinite), learning your girlfriend was a part of it then her dying in front of you can make anyone cold.
The only thing I have found scary in this drama so far

I am waiting for the day when we see more into Gong Shil's back story. We know that she was popular, her nickname was Big Sun(*Note: Her name actually means Sun, she's often called Tae Yang), and she was very outgoing until she almost died in an accident. It hasn't been revealed the type of accident she was in, we just know that her sister, Tae Gong Ri(Park Hee Bon), spent her marriage money to save her. Since her accident, Gong Shil has had a hard time sleeping(ghosts bother her at night) which resulted in her insomnia and avoids drinking because she becomes vulnerable to her body being taken over by random spirits. We saw this in episode 4 at Joong Won's house, she was Cha Hee Joo(JW's dead girlfriend), a child crying out for their mother, a French ballerina, and a dog. The ghost of day scenario has been compared to Dating Agency: Cyrano's client of the week thing and I like it, but i also enjoyed the break we got from that in episode 4. There was a ghost, but not something with a back story, it was sort of a vanity ghost that acted as that little thing in the back of your mind that told you needed to be better looking all the time.

Kang Woo(Seo In Guk) has been very suspicious and at first we weren't sure who he was exactly after, okay we're still not in on his full story. Even though he befriended Gong Shil for odd reasons, we do know that he'll fall for her for real. I mean, did you see his reactions when she appeared close to Joong Won. This IS a K-drama after all, him falling for her inevitable. I do find quite hilarious that he just brushes Tae Yi Ryeong(Kim Yoo Ri) off and even says she isn't pretty, that just bruised her ego real quick. While I do feel for her, she was jilted, I can't help but think her personality aided in her ex's decision to ditch her. We can also see she still has a grudge against Gong Shil from high school, remember I said her nickname was Big Sun? Yi Ryeong's was Little Sun. Yep, she was always in Gong Shil's shadow and was unpopular. Now that the tables have turned and she is more popular, she can't help but rub it in her face. While Gong Shil may be embarrassed over this, ghosts following her may take priority over this.
You may saying to yourself that you're not sure if you want to watch another Hong Sisters drama after being disappointed. Well, I say you never know until you try. You may have been disappointed with Big, many were, but this one seems promising. Plus we have Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub! Their chemistry is amazing so far and the ending to episode 4 was just.......*squeeeaaaaa*!
