A Hundred Years' Inheritance/Legacy(백년의 유산): Episode 5 Recap

Episode 5 starts off when Se Yoon tells Chae Won that he first met her in the Nam Hae Mental Hospital, with her trying to convince him that she wasn't crazy and was being held captive. She's confused since her husband told her that she went to Nam Hae to stay at a friend's mansion to relax, now she wonders who put her there. She wants to visit the hospital with him, but he declines saying that he doesn't like to get involved in other people's lives. He tells her that he forced himself to come see, but felt like he had to tell her what he knows so he wouldn't feel burdened. Se Yoon wishes her well and hopes she regains her memory. He gets up to leave while Chae Won is left trying to make sense of it all. In his car, Se Yoon convinces himself he's doing the right thing by not getting involved since he'd get too tired trying to help her. She's walking in a daze trying to piece everything together. Thinking that one of them is lying, she stops by a payphone and calls the mental hospital herself. They can't give her any information since they're not allowed to give out patient information. She says that she's the patient, but they can't verify her identity from the phone call.

 Meanwhile, Kkeut Soon makes Hyo Dong some dried Pollock soup to help with his hangover.  Since he's never done something like this before, she wonders if something happened at Chae Won's in-laws last night and denies it saying that Young Ja thanked him continuously for the Abalones.(You know, it might have helped some had he told her what was going on. Chae Won is only left picking up the pieces because she never informed her family about what was going on with her, not blaming her amnesia on herself but things would have been different had she told someone besides her doctor). It's clear that Kkeut Soon is not a fan of Young Ja by asking if she kept acting like she was better than he was(Finally someone sees through her!) Then Kkeut Soon begins asking about Choon Hee, calling her a fox-like woman and wondering why he was drinking with her. She says that she uses her charms by calling  men "Oppa" to lure them in to her bar. She's convinced that she tricked him into going there, without having to see anything for herself because he's an innocent person who naive to the ways of the world. She tells him it's best to stay away from her and her bar,  Hyo DoShe notng corrects her saying it was a cafe(hehe). She says that it's the same thing. and reminds him to stay away from that place. He then gets a brilliant idea to take the rest of the soup to Choon Hee to help aid her from her hangover. He gets there and begins thanking her for listening to him and he was bringing the soup for her, but we see that he's just practicing. When he hears her coming he leaves the pot on the ground and walks away. She sees it and wonders if the Rooftop Oppa brought it for eating all of her ramyun. She takes it inside to eat. He watches her take and laughs to ask about the "other oppa from before".

 Just as he's leaving, we see his mother-in-law walking and she heads straight into the Cafe Opera. As Choon Hee is eating, Kkeut Soon walks in and sits down. Saying she's a busy person, but she had to come down to say this. She notices how all the men in town seem to be attracted to her and she warns that she can't do that to her son-in-law so stop using her efforts(charms) to get him. Choon Hee obviously is confused and Kkeut Soon begins that she made him sick by making him drink all night. Of course Choon Hee is going to defend herself saying that's not what happened, but Kkeut Soon isn't buying it. She tells her that if she does that again, she won't stand still. Before she leaves, Choon Hee tells her that he didn't pay for his drinks. Kkeut Soon gets upset and asks how much is it, Choon Hee says that it's usually 347,000 won(about $326.02), but she's take 300,000 won(about $281.86). While she's getting the money out, she's mumbling about her scamming and tricking people, but she says no she's not. Then Kkeut Soon begins to say that she'll pay her in payments and if she sees Hyo Song over there again then it won't be fun for her. Choon Hee says that she hasn't done anything, but she's getting blamed. kkeut Soon then places some money on the table that isn't nearly enough to pay for the bill. Then she sees a familiar pot on the table, she tastes the soup and realizes that it's her pot. Kkeut Soon begins ask her about that pot and Choon Hee says that the Rooftop Oppa gave it her, but she's not convinced saying that she knows how her own food tastes and that's hers from her home. Though Kkeut Soon can't think of how it got here all the way from her house. She's in denial since she just had a conversation with Hyo Dong about all of this, then Choon Hee figures out it was him.
        Hyo Dong his pacing outside of Chae Won's home when she walks up, still looking sad from before. He asks her if she would mind going on a father-daughter date with him, she agrees. He takes her out to eat lunch, but gives her more of his food since he's already eaten and it appears that she hasn't eaten anything all day. Still knowing she can't remember anything, he asks how tough it is not knowing anything. She nods yes. He reassures her that it's alright since he drinks sometimes and can't remember some things so he asks his friends what he said and what went on. He tells her that's how she must feel right now, curious about everything and wanting to know. Then she starts to cry saying that she doesn't know the knd of person she was and asks if she was ever admitted into a hospital for something. She asks if she had depression or something else that was wrong with her brain. He says that she was a very bright and energetic person and that nothing was wrong with her. He asks who said it and she brushes it off saying that since she lost her memory, she wondered if something was wrong with her brain. He assures her that nothing was wrong with her. She thanks him and calls him dad, you can see him holding back the tears.

    Chae Won gets home and asks the housekeeper where her belonging are since she can't find them, the ahjumma hesitates to say anything since she was reprimanded last time she spoke too much. Chae Won is desperate so she says that her things are in the basement, but she doubts they're still there. She says that the Lady of the House keeps the basement key. Chae Won goes to her mother-in-law's room to search for the key when Young Ja walks in and scolds her for being in her room without her permission. Chae Won stammers that she heard her things were in the basement and was looking for the key so she could get them. Young Ja tells her that she packed her things up because her room was being redone, but she hid her things well while the workers were going in and out of the house and basement so she won't be able to find it anyways. Regardless, Young Ja holds the key up and tells her that she can check if she wants. Chae Won says no, it's okay and Young Ja says that she's happy for trusting her. She then asks her to draw her a bath since she left work early because she was sick. Before walking out to do so, she asks if she was ever admitted into the mental hospital and Young Ja appears shocked before asking where she heard that. Chae Won says that the man who saved her life told her that he first met her at the Nam Hae Mental Hospital. Young Ja asks her if she really wants to find her memories because if she finds about her true self then she'll be disappointed. Chae Won looks confused then Young Ja says never mind I already said too much. She starts to dab her eyes as if she's become emotional.

   Cut to a scene with Do Hee giving Sul Joo a massage while rambling on about money. Seol Ju stops and says not to worry because she talked to the president a.k.a. her husband and she should hear something this week about the promotion. Do Hee then begins to bow to her in thanks for asking for a promotion for her husband. Seol Ju looks embarassed and tells her bowing isn't needed since they're friends. As she's jumping up and down thanking her, she gets a phone call from her father in law, Pyong Dal to meet him. When she drives up, he's outside looking as unhappy as ever. She asks him why he wants to see her like this and he says that it's time to pay up. He asked each of his children for 5,000,000 won(about $4,697 USD) and it's time to pay. Do Hee then calls Ki Ok to warn her that her father was asking for the money now, again she wonders if he has dementia. She cuts the call short since it's time for her class with the Ahjussi, Kang Jin. He wants her to give him a good entrance to liven up the class for him. She seems unhappy about it, but introduces him when she walks in. As he's receiving applause, a woman stands up and demands for her money. He says he doesn't know who she is, but she says she's from the Uhm Ji Restaraunt and he made off with $300,000 won($281 USD) of hers and she wants it back. He begins to compliment her, but all she wants is her money. Just as he's trying to speak to the Uhn Ji ahjumma, another woman speaks up saying she's from the Three Stars Cleaners, Mother Byul. He never paid his dry cleaning bill, he lightly says that it's a small bill that she's been worrying about. He jokes that she's had a fight with her husband then another woman comes up to accuse him of not paying his bill at her karoake bar, saying that the amount of songs he sang and drinks he drank amount into the thousands or tens of thousands. She holds her hand out demanding money. Just then all 3 women grab onto him in anger, all demanding that he pay them back. All while Ki Ok looks on in disgust.

He then yells saying that how could he pay them back if he can't get to his wallet and he will give them their money. Instead of getting his wallet out, he asks Ki Ok for some money to lend him and he will pay her back when he gets paid. She doesn't want to give him anything since he's known for not paying money back. He tells her that if she doesn't help him then who will be responsible for the women there who want to learn music. He says he'll pay her in 2 weeks and will even write a contract proving he'll pay her. She still looks hesitant to do it.
   Chul Gou is just now getting home and Chae Won is helping him get his jacket off while he's asking her about her day. She starts to hesitate before telling him what she knows. She tells him that she wants to go to Nam Hae tomorrow because there was someone who saw her there and she wants to verify that it was actually her. Of course he looks uneasy with that idea and asks who said that to her. He then runs downstairs to his mother in a panic because she knows now. Young Ja is calm about it saying that if she wants to find out let her, he's still nervous asking her why she's so cool about it. Chae Won comes down and Young Ja immediately starts bragging about her son saying that he'd let driver Kim take her since it's so far. Chae Won says that's alright and he shouldn't be concerned. Chul Gou says no since the roads are going to be rugged and icy, that she needs to take the car. Young Ja says that since she clearly doesn't believe either of them and wants to confirm everything herself then her son should be upset, but he's not. He gets that from his father. He laughs nervously saying it was nothing.
    Se Yoon is outside of Choon Hee's place to switch back the bags.When he walks in, she's drinking with a few older men calling them 'Oppa'. When Se Yoon walks in saying he's there for his bag, one of the men jokes that he's her lover. She says no since she's too old. When she goes to get the bag, she remembers that she got his number from his diary and begins to look for it. In her haste searching, she accidentally knocks an old picture inside the bag. She finds the diary and places it inside the bag to give back to Se Yoon. When she gives it back to him, she offers him a drink but he declines and gives her money instead. She mentions the girl int he pictures and says that they look good together, he's visibly upset and decides to leave. When he's gone, she remarks that he's such a cold person.
   At Se Yoon's, Seol Ju walks in to his room while he's taking a shower. She goes to walk out before deciding to help him organize his stuff and starts clearing out his bag when she comes upon the picture Choon Hee accidentally dropped in. At first she doesn't know who it is then realizes it's Choon Hee then she wonders why it's in his bag. She reads it and it says Sang Rok Soo Orphanage and determines that it is indeed her childhood friend, but she looks panicked and worried.

    Pyong Dal is now at Ki Choon and Kang Sook's restaraunt waiting to be paid when they offer him some JokBal to eat, but he declines saying that he can eat at home. He says to simply give him the money and says that his older brother wrote him a check for 5 Million won already, but Kang Sook says that their situations are different. Ki Moon works for a big corporation and is an executive while they own a small business that doesn't make nearly as much so taking that much money from them isn't right. Pyong Dal says that he didn't raise to think differently of each like that.Pyong Dal says that if they can't pay the money then go work at the noodle shop. Ki Choon says that he will never work at the noodle shop again even if he has to sell his organs, he won't work there. Of course this upsets his father, but Kang Sook stops it from getting worse. Bo Reum comes in and tells his parents that his academy fee is overdue by 10 days. She looks at Pyong Dal and says that's how they are living and can't afford to give him the money in the amount that he wants. They could do 50,000 won, but not 5 million won. She reveals that Ki Choon has been unemployed for 3 years and he says he's embarrassed. Ki Choon says that maybe they could cut out Taekwondo in order to pay the fee and Pyong Dal looks upset by the news.
    At their house, Kkeut Soon, Ki Ok, and Hyo Dong are preparing dinner but he's spaced out. They're discussing Pyong Dal's need for the money while he's in a daze. Kkeut Soon asks him about the pot incident and he says that he liked it so much that he ate the whole pot, she knows he lying. He then excuses himself to the bathroom.
   Choon Hee is washing dishes thinking about who left her the soup and she says that if it was the Oppa she saw before then why didn't he give it to her in person, then she wonders if he left her another gift of facial powder. Her phone rings and it's silence. She keeps saying hello, but all she hears is breathing. She says that if you at least got the number wrong, apologize. It's Seol Ju who called and is sitting silently on the other end listening to her voice. She then realizes that it is in fact her. Se Yoon catches her off guard and she says that she was on the phone with Do Hee. She asks what he was doing and he says going to get some water. Seol Ju then asks where the owner of the other bag worked and tells her it's called Cafe Opera, but he wants to know why she's asking. She says that she has a friend in Paju and to thank the woman, she could help increase her sales. Se Yoon says the name, but tells her there's no need for her to be there since it appeared to be targeting men. We then see Se Yoon looking at a video on his camera, it's his girlfriend Han Seol setting up a surprise party for him celebrating their 100th day together. Joo Ri was also on hand to help with the party as she is the one who recorded the video. In the flashback, we see Se Yoon in happier times with her. He then says how much he misses her. Kinda heartbreaking knowing that he's still hurt over her death, it puts things into perspective about his attitude.

  Meanwhile, Chae Won is awake wondering why Se Yoon lied to her. After all, he is the person who saved her life so what reasons would he have to lie about something like that. She thinks that it's her husband who is lying and noticed how he was caught off guard by her request to go to Nam Hae. She wonders what happened between them. The next morning, she's at the mental hospital waiting to see if she was indeed a patient there. She's told that there was no record of a patient named Min Chae Won ever being there, she asks to check again. They're persistent that there was no one by that name there. She asks to see the security feed, but there's nothing on there either. Now she's confused more than ever. She now sees that Se Yoon lied to her, but she wants to know why. Young Ja is on the phone with the hospital director and apologizes for asking him for a favor. She says she's ashamed for not being able to take care of her own family when she takes care of thousands of workers at her company. When she's off the phone, Chul Goo is curious about the conversation even though he's been sitting here listening the whole time. She tells him happily that there are no traces of her left there. He sighs with relief saying that it's already hard on her with her memory loss and he doesn't want anything happening to Chae Won. Of course we all know how his mom gets whenever he talks about his wife like that. She tells him to be prepared for the next and he wonders why that guy would tell her something that would shake her up and why was she meeting with him privately. She tells him that after the shareholders meeting that they'd talk more.

  Se Yoon is in a meeting about a new flavor or something when Chae Won calls to ask him to meet up,but he refuses and says that he has no more reasons to see her.
Cue scene to Choon Hee shoveling snow when Kang Jin aka Rooftop Oppa comes in asking how her day was. She tells him that he should be helping since he lived there too, but he says that her cafe causes more traffic than he does so she should do it. Before he walks away she asks him if he was the one who left the soup for her and he asks why would he?Seol Ju drives up and gets out of her car, she has the right place and is about to go talk to Choon Hee when Hyo Dong walks up to take over the shoveling. She then gets back in her car wondering who he is because that is definitely Choon Hee. Assuming that she came back to start a business. Choon Hee tells Hyo Dong that she knows it was him who left the food, he asks how she knew and she said his mother-in-law came by. She starts to complain how Kkeut Soon came by and started nagging her saying it was unfair and she wasn't at fault. Hyo Dong agrees saying of course she wasn't. He was thankful for her listening to him and brought the soup as a thank you for being comforting. He tells her that he's sorry for his mother-in-law and he hopes she's not mad. She isn't and tells him make sure she doesn't come back to her cafe. Then she takes it back saying no because she remembered the warning about being around him. He says that he's sorry for Kkeut Soon misunderstanding everything. Choon Hee asks abut Chae Won's condition, he states that she's the same. But stresses that she's the only one who knows, his family doesn't even know that she lost her memory. Choon Hee says that he should be talking to his wife about this stuff and he hesistates and then says in due time everything will come out. Seol Ju's watching and assumes that Hyo Dong is her husband and that she must have married when she was in America.

 When Hyo Dong comes back, Kkeut Soon begin asking where he's been saying he'd been gone since the morning. He starts stammering, looking for an answer but Pyong Dal scolds her about asking for his whereabouts when she used to not be like that. She fires back that it doesn't involve him. To avoid anything further questioning he says he'll be back in 5 minutes to help with the noodles. Pyong Dal tells her that she's treating him like a 7-year-old. She turns the tables on him asking him why he's asking for money from their kids when they're trying to make a living. He yells at her to stop pestering him. I really do love their bickering, it's really funny. 
   Do Hee and Ki Ok visit Ki Choon and Kang Sook at the restaurant and immediately Do Hee begins complaining about money. Kang Sook is visibly annoyed with her and gets to up to tend to some pork she was chopping. Ki Choon says that they  don't have any money, but Do Hee starts naming off things that they pay for so they can't possibly have enough money. Including their son's tuition and Ki Moon's salary isn't that big for an executive. Ki Ok clearly doesn't believe her and Ki Choon is trying to keep the peace. Do Hee says that since Ki Ok and Kang Sook are friends from high school, they purposely sided with each other and left her out like an outcast. At the same time, they both wonder what she's talking about. She says that she was always squeezed out of her money and was treated badly on family occasions  Kang Sook tells her to stop being do sensitive and to eat some pig's feet. Do Hee quickly covers her nose and says that she doesn't eat food like that. She says that she doesn't eat that type of meat and has an allergy to it. Kang Sook scoff saying that's the first she's heard of an allergy like that and Ki Choon and Ki Ok agree with her. Kang Sook begins saying that she knows that she's from Gangnam, but this "stuff" is their livelihood. Do Hee gets up and says that she should say whatever is on her mind. Ki Ok tries to calm her down while Ki Choon tries telling Kang Sook to sit down, but Do Hee wants to hear it. Kang Sook stands up and tells her that just because she's wealthy, it doesn't give her the right to be condenscending to others and she even gets out of family events because of her arrogance and she's a little too much. She says why does she keep saying that 5 million won is too much whens he never thinks about the family members who don't have any money at all. Do Hee asks if she's going to hit her with the pig's leg, but Ki Choon insists that wasn't the case. Do Hee says that she'll leave since they're siding with each other. Ki Choon asks her why she didn't stop her from walking out, but she retorts that only relatives should do that to prompt Ki Ok to ask what she's talking about. Ki Choon reminds her that she's late for the class she's helping with. Kang Sook reminds him to tell the family about their divorce.

  Kang Jin is singing in the classroom when Ki Ok walks in and asks if he has a class, he says no. She scoffs saying thst he's still going to teach after what happened yesterday, he's really something. Then she holds out her hand and he says what. She wants her money that she lent him. He says he'll pay her back tomorrow since he has no cash. She gets upset accusing him of ripping her off and he gets offended at her accusation. She gets a piece paper and hands it to him to write an IUO to her. He calls her a thief for her penalties for not paying her back on time.
   Chae Won comes back home to find Young Ja sitting down drinking tea. She innocently asks about the hospital and hears that Chae Won was never admitted, she says of course wasn't. She's wondering why he told her that and Young Ja asks if she was curious about it. The housekeeper leaves to go to the store and Young Ja told her that she did it on purpose because she had something to tell her in secret. She says that she wasn't going to say anything, especially since Chae Won had lost her memory. But since she was so curious and keeps wondering, there's no way around it. Young Ja takes out photos of Chae Won and Se Yoon out together on several occasions  All the pictures look suspicious and she tells her that she was cheating on her husband before she lost her memory. She admits to hating her, but gives this as her reason for not liking her. She insists that Chae Won was the on who was going to divorce her son and told her about it. She gives her the envelop with eh motion to file for divorce. She then tells her that Se Yoon wants nothing to do with her now and wanted to dump her. She tells her that since her son loved her so much, she did her best to cover things up. She says that there was no use in trying to get her memory back since she'd be disappointed to find out who she was.

   Chae Won tells Se Yoon that she will wait for hours if she has to so she could talk to him. When he gets to her, he's complaining about him not wanting to get involved and he told her this. He's given a cup of water while he's complaining to her about it. She throws water on his face and says that if they were ever having an affair. He looks surprised and then blocks her from throwing more water on him. End.
