Episode 4
The episode starts off with where we left off in episode 3, Young Ja and Chae Won arriving at the restaurant. Young Ja orders 2 kiwi juices and excuses herself to the bathroom before they are seated. Chae Won is already siting down when Se Yoon arrives. Chae Won asks why he's there and he says that her mother in law wanted to formally thank him. However, mommy dearest has left telling someone to watch them and take good pictures as they come out. The host tells them that she had an important meeting to get to so she had to leave early. She's already ordered and has paid for the food, Chae Won declines to eat but Se Yoon says that she should properly thank him. She stays seated and begins to eat when the food arrives.
He starts asking her about her health and she says the doctor says that her brain is okay and she should recover soon. While she's saying this, she's having trouble breathing.
He escorts her out and there's someone taking pictures of them as they walk out. Mommy Dearest receives the pictures on her phone and is satisfied with her plan. She busy muttering to herself when Chul Goo comes in wondering where Chae Won is since he called home and was told she was out with his mother. She says she had a meeting and had to come back, but he still wants to know where "Our Chae Won" is. She gets upset over those words, but comes back to say that maybe she already made it back home. He says no that the housekeeper said that she hadn't made it back yet. Mommy Dearest(MD as I will be calling her) suggests that maybe she went shopping, CG perks up wondering if his mom gave her money. Lol Like that would ever happen voluntarily.
At the hospital, the doctor tells Se Yoon that she has a kiwi allergy and it could be deadly. Sadly there is no treatment, but caution. He again gets mistaken as her husband and starts complaining: "I'm a bachelor. A bachelor! Why do I keep having to hear that I'm your husband, huh?" All she could say is sorry. He asks her if she didn't know about her kiwi allergy, but since her amnesia she can't remember. He then asks her if she ordered it herself and she says no, her mother did. He looks a bit suspicious wondering why her own mother in law didn't know about her kiwi allergy, like isn't that something she would know since she's been living there for 3 years.
Back at the noodle house, Keut Soon is talking to Hyo Dong about Chae Won, he still thinks she's in Canada with her husband so he figures that's why she hasn't called yet. Grumpy Gramps aka Pyung Dal walks in once again complaing about his children and their lack of enthusiasm for the family business. Since the 100 year celebration of the noodle house, none of them have called to see how things were going. This does not please him one bit. His wife tells him that since their kids have no interest in it then it will end when they die.
Cut to Choon Hee making rice cakes when the singing ahjussi comes in asking why isn't there any music playing. He starts to sing to congratulate her on her store opening, but she shuts him down saying he will get spit in the food and that will be disgusting. He sits down and starts picking at the rice cake while making snide comments about her. He tries to set up another deal with her, saying he'll singe for a great price. Again, she says no. Afterwards, she begins walking around handing out rice cakes to different business owners(mostly men) to invite them to her Cafe. She spots some noodles hanging and walks over. It's Hyo Dong's house that he shares with his in laws. She still thinks he's married and he's a little embarrassed because of his lie. Choon Hee gives a rice cake to Keut Soon, but she declines saying that she doesn't want to be burdened to have to go there if she accepts it since she doesn't drink. Choon Hee says that she won't be burdened to go there and to just accept her gift. She leaves after being a bit embarassed by Keut Soon's comments about a cafe and bar being the same thing. Keut Soon comments that a woman like that probably has a line of men waiting for her. Hyo Dong looks like he wants to run after her, but doesn't.
We see a scene of Sul Joo opening a music box that has a picture of her and Choon Hee from over 30 years ago, she's still wondering why she's in Korea all of a sudden. She thinks that she must be married and have children by now so the it must be a short visit and there's nothing to worry about. Se Yoon is driving Chae Won back from the hospital, but she wants to walk. Mainly to clear her head and to think. She says that the more she tries to remember, the more confused she becomes. She feels like an empty can because there's nothing there. He ends up driving her all the way home anyways. Se Yoon calls his friend who works at the mental hospital and tells him to find information on Chae Won. Once inside, she has a phone call from MD and tells her that she just got back from the hospital. Mommy Dearet sound upset at the news that she was in the ER and couldn't finish eating.
Hyo Dong must have felt bad for the way his mother in law handled things, so he goes to visit Choon Hee at her cafe with a gift. He doesn't give it to her when he sees her having drinks and lunch with some of the biggest players in Jaju. He leaves the plant on the steps before he leaves.
Singing Ahjussi calls Ki Ok in the middle of the night to give her some sheet music for her to learn before the he's teaching tomorrow. He tells her that he likes raw eggs before he starts singing and huffs asking why should she bother with knowing what he likes raw eggs or boiled eggs. He tells her that she's not married yet because she doesn't take care and look after the people next to her. She asks him what he's going to do for her and he says that if she accompanies him then he'll find her a man. Apparently he's good at it. She tells him to worry about himself since she heard he was a widower, but he becomes aggravated at this news. He says that he's a natural-born bachelor and will show her a copy of his family registry to prove it. Ki Ok walks away saying that she doesn't care whether he's single or a natural-born bachelor.
At home, Chae Won asks the housekeeper if she had a kiwi allergy before and the ahjumma says yes she did. She said that everyone in the household knew about it. Chae Won then asks about her clothes and possesions that aren't there since she has very little in her closet. The housekeeper is about to tell her when Young Ja comes in and yells at her for gossiping. She goes on about how they could serve her kiwi juice(Umm because you ordered it....) and asks her about Se Yoon, like if she finds him attractive and if she likes him because he saved her life twice. Chae Won doesn't know where she's going with this. When Chul Goo comes home, she tells her not to say anything to him because he might become worried. She also warns the housekeeper to keep her mouth shut. Chul Goo is praising his mom for her change in attitude and says that they should go buy new cell phones since she possibly lost hers in the accident. He's happy and sometimes wishes she wouldn't gain her memory back.
Mommy Dearest calls Se Yoon to thank him once again, but asks him what he thinks of Chae Won. She then apologizes when he seems confused and hangs up. He's wondering what she's talking about. Just then Sul Joo comes in and gives Se Yoon a new suit for his first day at the office in 3 years. She says that she wants him to look especially nice since it's his first day back.
At the noodle house, Pyung Dal tells his wife and son in law that he wants each of his kids to give 5,000,000(roughly $4,732.83 USD) won since they don't want any part of the business. Keut Soon asks if he has dementia. He wants the money to fix up the shop and says that since they were raised on those noodles then that's the least they could do. Hyo Dong has to do the dirty work and calls each of his in laws to tell what their father wants. No surprise that all of them are shocked, especially when he called at night.
Ki Choon just repeats the amount of money, Ki Ok asks if he has dementia(hehe), and Ki Moon says that he understand much to the dismay of his wife, Do Hee. He tells her what was he suppose to say, no? She says that his father is being too much and begins to complain about him making them work before.
It's Se Yoon's first day back at work and looks who's waiting behind the plants: none other than Joo Ri.
She tells him that she works at the company in the marketing department(Who else besides him is not shocked at this? She did wait for him for hours at his dead girlfriend's memorial). In his office she gives him a lunch she bought saying she was worried that he wouldn't have time to eat. He thanks her when his mother walks in. Sul Joo looks her up and down when Joo Ri says hello and leaves. She says that Joo Ri was pretty and seems nice, she wonders if they were close. He says that they often met up and she wants to meet up with her alone. He tells her they're not in that kind of relationship so don't anticipate anything. He reminds her that she promised him that she wouldn't get in the middle of his personal life, she apologizes. Choon He then calls saying she found his number in his diary and she kept his bag safe. They agree for him to meet her at her cafe since she can't leave. She then sees a picture of him and his girlfriend commenting on how handsome he is and wondering whose son he is.
Do Hee makes an unexpected visit to Ki Choon's place to discuss the 5 Million won their father wants. He and Kang Sook mention they're trying to sell their house to which Do Hee mistakes them as upgrading to which they both reply no. Kang Sook barely makes enough to pay the bills.
Just as Hyo Dong and Keut Soon are preparing dinner, Ki Ok comes by with something that she says is a replacement for her 5 million won she's suppose to pay. It's abalones or sea snail. Her mother is kind of upset, but Hyo Dong just laughs it off. She claims that she barely has enough money to pay her rent and to tell her father to wake up from his dream, she leaves. Keut Soon tells Hyo Dong to take this to Chae Won's since they didn't give them any New Year's gifts and to hurry since it's almost dinner time.
Chae Won is taking some medicine when MD walks in and apologizes for everything she went through. Saying she wishes she could be by her side more so nothing bad will happen. Then she begins to talk about the real reason she's in there, but she doesn't want her to misunderstand her. Since she's been taking medicine, she has to make sure that there isn't a child involved or it wouldn't be good. Chae Won doesn't seem to understand and she says that having a child there will make things more difficult, but don't tell her husband because guys really don't care about that stuff. Yes, you read it right. Young Ja told Chae Won to make sure she wasn't pregnant and not to get pregnant. Of course if she does become pregnant then it will be nearly impossible to get rid of her then. Chul Goo comes in wondering what they're gossiping about and his mother just says that they're having girl talk and should be allowed to have secrets since they're closer now. He laughs and back hugs his mom, she's over the moon saying he hasn't been that close with her in a while. IMO I think it's borderline creepy at how happy she is to receive a back hug from her adult son whom she is very close to.
Young Ja becomes upset when she finds that Joo Ri let Hyo Dong in without telling her, but it's too late because he walks through the front door. YJ asks him why he came over without calling and he explains he was coming to give them abalones and ginseng liquor that he knows his son-in-law likes. She's still a bit jumpy when he asks about the kids and where they were, she lies and says that they wouldn't be back for another 10 days or so. He turns to leave when Chul Goo comes downstairs with Chae Won following behind him. Chul Goo introduces her to her father, she says hello and he wonders why she's like that. He asks her if she knows her father, but she doesn't remember. They tell him that she was in an accident and has lost her memory. Hyo Dong becomes upset, wondering why they didn't tell him about his daughter's condition and chose to lie about it. Young Ja chooses to explain why they kept it a secret, but he's visibly upset. He asks why they lied to him since he's her father and has every right to know about her health. He tries to take her home, but she doesn't move. Everyone says that it's best that she stays where she is so she doesn't become more confused. It's actually a very heartbreaking scene to watch as he's trying to understand why she can't remember him.
Chul Goo says that he promised Chae Won that he'd take her to visit him next week. Young Ja tells him to stop fretting since it's not like they were planning something devious from the start and were only thinking about her when she made up the story. Hyo Dong gets up to leave, then Chae Won follows him out. She apologizes for him being upset, but he says he's not mad at her. She tells him that no matter how much she tries, she can't remember. She wonders why she's so emotional, but doesn't know why. He gives her a hug and says she'll get her memory back and he loves her. He's about to leave when Chul Goo comes out, Hyo Dong says sorry for the way he blew up but Chul Goo says that it's okay. He tells him to take his daughter inside since it's cold out. He promises to take care of her.
As he's walking back home in a daze, he passes by Choon Hee but fails to say anything. He comes back asking for some alcohol. He takes an entire bottle in an attempt to drink it all, but she stops him. She has to poor him a shot and drinks it in one..well..shot. She thinks he's had a fight with his wife, but he's not really paying that any mind. He poor her a shot and then they're drinking together.
It cuts to Sul Joo looking at Choon Hee's number contemplating whether or not to call her. Se Yoon walks in interrupting her thoughts and her husband comes out asking about his first day back. He jokingly asks for a raise. His phone starts ringing so he walks upstairs to answer it, it's Sok Joon( the mental hospital director). He tells Se Yoon that Chae Won was suffering from clinical depression, but since she was a VVIP member he doesn't know many details. Sok Joon says that according to the attending physician she was normal. This appears to have him a tad concerned.
Chae Won is awake thinking about the incidents that happened and becomes frustrated as she tries her hardest to remember, but can't.
At Choon Hee's cafe, she and Hyo Dong are drunk as he's talking about how beautiful his daughter is and shows her a picture of her. He says that she resembles her a little and she says no since they're not related. Once he takes a long look at her picture he remembers what happened and starts crying. It's really sad as he's scared that her memory may never come back and she won't be the Chae Won she was before. He starts sobbing as she consoles him when his phone rings. He's too drunk/distraught to answer so she answers for him even though she's drunk as well. It's his mother in law and Choon Hee in her drunken state says that the "Utility Pole Oppa is so drunk he can't take the call", but thinks it's his wife who answered. Keut Soon realizes who it is and rushes out of the house to get him. On her way in she runs into none other than our Singing Ahjussi when they accidentally bump into each other. He follows her into the cafe and stops her from moving Hyo Dong because he thinks she's his wife and is there to scold him.
She's confused and asks him what is he talking about, he answers that she's there because she thinks her husband is having an affair. She then says no that's my son-in-law. Before taking Hyo Dong home, she looks at the ahjussi and tells him "You look so sleek, but you're so silly". Ha! Seems all the women he came in contact with find him annoying. On the way home, Hyo Dong is still mumbling about Chae Won and Pyung Dal wonders what happened since he's never done this before. They let him sleep since he's too drunk to talk about it.
Se Yoon asks Chae Won to meet him since he has something to tell her about herself. He tells her that she first met him in a mental hospital's bathroom and how he thought she was crazy at first since he didn't know much about her. He remembers her telling him that she was locked up and needed help. She's asking herself who locked her up and for what reason, was she really mentally ill? He tells her he doesn't know and hates getting into others' business, but this was bothering him and he didn't want to have a heavy heart. Plus, he figured since she'd find out anyways so it's better that he tell her. She says that her husband said that she went to rest at a mansion somewhere, but why would he lie to her. Again, he doesn't know and doesn't want to get involved. Chae Won asks him to go with her to the hospital, but he declines. He hates getting involved and this is something for her to do. He claims that he had to force himself to meet her since he doesn't usually help other people. It ends with Chae Won wondering who is lying to her: Se Yoon or her husband.
My thoughts:
The main scenes that stuck out to me was the scene when Hyo Dong went to give the gift to her in laws. Seeing the hurt and anger in his face made me emotional, I actually cried because I can't imagine what it must feel like to not be recognized by your child, your only one at that.
Since this drama's synopsis says it's about a noodle house and family, I don't expect for this amnesia thing to last past episode 5 or 6 and the teaser poster shows her with Se Yoon so when they actually get together?
Am I the only one who thinks stalker when it comes to JooRi? She waited for him outside of the memorial and then she somehow got a job at his company to get close to him. Her character description says that she's not too smart, but uses her innocence to win Se Yoon's heart. It seems like Chul Goo is trying to make up for everything that happened between him and Chae Won so in a way I feel for him there, but he's the cause of it. Had he been a man and stood up to him mother by not allowing her to abuse her and had he not been cheating on her then she wouldn't be in this mess. It's his fault and I think he knows that. I can't wait for the moment when she regains her memory. That will be a sight, but Mommy Dearest was using her memory loss to make it seem like she was the one having the affair.
Can't wait until episode 5 and 6, looks like Young Ja will make sure that Chae Won will never find out about her being locked in the mental hospital.
