First Impression: When I See You Again
I literally just discovered this drama by accident and realized it had just started, so I lucked out only 2 episodes had aired when I found it. Let's get the basic premise out of the way.
When I See You Again, is a 2015 Taiwanese drama series that follows a Xia You Qian (Jasper Liu), head of a successful private equity firm, who is well liked by everyone (including a socialite, whom we haven't seen yet) and the best at what he does. You Qian can read people by just one glance by using his keen observation skills, which helps his company. When he goes back to his hometown of Pu Lang Village for a sponsored event, he runs into his high school crush, An Xi (Mandy Wei), who was responsible for him nearly losing his life 10 years ago. An Xi is now in debt while trying to keep the hostel she inherited from her father in business. When You Qian purposely causes her to lose the competition, will she have to marry her debtor? That's how the actual synopsis ends, by the beginning of episode 2 we're given this answer so it's not like it's a part of the main plot - at least it seems this way to me.
So far, the plot seems simple: Boy has crush on girl in high school. Girl seemingly rejects him causes him to look at things a different way. Boy returns to his hometown and sees his former crush going through hard times. Does he hate her or does his heart still flutter? This would seem like what it's about, but right away we know that there are things that we're left in the dark about. For one, we know that An Xi genuinely liked/likes You Qian. From the flashbacks we've gotten so far indicate she liked him and enjoyed their time together, whatever happened with her (I assume) father was her reason for telling him not to believe everything that's told to you. Whether this is what his main issue was or is something else has yet to be told, but we do know that he still harbors feelings for her. My question would be, when will she remember who he is? Surely this can't drag on for half of the show before she realizes that he was the boy she helped from being bullied years ago. We don't know how much time they spent together, episode 1 was kind of messy and seemed to be randomly put together, but episode 2 was more cohesive and flowed better.
We will obviously have a love triangle in which part of it has made itself known, Zhang Ya Lu (Liu Shi Hong) obviously likes An Xi so it's safe to say that our second lead Hu Yan Ze (Jet Chao) will not gravitate towards her & it'll consist of a second lead we haven't seen (Ivy Shao as Hu Yong Qing), who is said to also like You Qian. Judging purely from episode 2, Yan Ze's love line will be with hostel employee Zhang Ya En (Zooey Tseng), which will be a nice change from everyone being in love with the leads - although An Xi has her creditor trying everything he can to marry her. He feels more like a comic relief and serves as a purpose for You Qian to stay in Pu Lang Village longer than expected to help get him off her back. Though I must say that I kind of feel for the man, he has to go through these tactics to win her, but she's clearly not interested. He should really find someone who actually finds him tolerable.
Other side characters are less annoying and are there for the support of the main couple or will perhaps serve as yet another obstacle for them to overcome. With Ya Lu harboring a crush on An Xi, her hostel employees may choose to take sides depending on whom they feel is worthy of An Xi's heart. We haven't gotten too much into their individual lives, but they've begun to show distinctive personalities - which is a wonderful thing for secondary characters. Although we have yet to really see too many people on You Qian's side stand on their own, but I know we will in the future especially his boss and grandfather.
Bottom line: This drama is cute with likable characters and a back story that's getting revealed slowly with each episode. If you're looking for a light romantic comedy then When I See You Again may be the one for you.
