Drama Review Detective of Seonam Girls High School Episode 8

I don't even know what to say right now. Give me a minute, I need to get myself together before I talk about this episode. Yes, it was that emotional. Wait, is that dust in my eyes? Hold on a second and let me fix that. Okay, I'm fine now. Word has it that jTBC cut it down to 14 episodes instead of the planned 16 with a season 2 that's rumored to be in talks. I know it's not a ratings issue, it's been doing okay and hasn't dropped. We'll just have to wait and see how things turn out & if this is indeed true. For now, we discuss episode 8!

Well, looks like I wasn't completely wrong, but not exactly right either. I figured Se Yoo got an abortion due to the pressures of being a model student and her goals, but I was not prepared for them to reveal it was Chang Hyun's mother who forced her into it. My reaction was similar to Mi Do and Chae Yool's when I heard this. She had absolutely no right to tell Se Yoo to get an abortion especially without telling Chang Hyun, I can see why his entire personality changed after that. It's understandable she was worried about them raising a child that young, but Se Yoo isn't her and she's not alone. Chang Hyun was right by her side and he felt betrayed that his girlfriend and mother made this decision without informing him until afterwards. Adding in that she's not Se Yoo's guardian so she had no legal rights to do this especially since abortions are illegal for minors to do so unless they have legal guardian permission. Chang Hyun's mother acted impulsively and was the cause of everything including Se Yoo's suicide attempt. The girls may have taken the blame, but all they did was bring emotions to light that needed to be dealt with. This case painted a bigger picture that can be seen as an issue within society and Chang Hyun's mother said it: Time will heal everything and they'll get over it. Too many times people try to bury their feelings and not confront what happened out of fear of being judged and ridiculed. Se Yoo was told aborting Doo Ri was best and she'd live her life happily. Unfortunately, that's not the case and she was only a shell of her former self not really 'living', Chang Hyun was the same way. Due to society's mindset, Se Yoo was forced to think it was best even though it's not what she really wanted then she was told to suppress her feelings and move on. If the detectives wouldn't have dug up her past, she would have still cracked. Anything can trigger those emotions and the investigation helped her deal with it much sooner.
I found it really admirable of the girls to figure out a way to help her even though they were reprimanded for their actions. Chang Hyun and Se Yoo can now move on and attempt to be happy for their baby's sake. I think this episode also brought to light how even an 18 year-old can be a loving parent. Chang Hyun and Se Yoo are young, but as we saw from that tiny apartment, they were more than ready to be parents and were all set to support themselves. What Chang Hyun did was wrong by taking the doctor's son away for a few days, but it also caused him to see that this young man lost a child and was already a loving father. I'm not saying that every high school student needs to have kids if they're ready, but don't underestimate them if they ever find themselves in that situation.
Episode 8 mainly focused on Se Yoo, but we got more of our main mystery surrounding Mr. Wise Old Owl. Someone pointed out that he seemed to scold Chae Yool more so than the rest of the girls even though it was a team effort. Why was he so hard on them for digging up Se Yoo's past? Well from what Chae Yool discovers at the end of the episode, he has a dark past that he apparently tried to run from already. How does any of this tie into the Mi Ye case and why did he look so darn creepy when Chae Yool promised to do anything in return for him saving Se Yoo from expulsion? I hope all this case's reveal will be well worth the mystery surrounding it. Unless they make us wait for season 2.
