Drama Wednesdays: King of Dramas
Welcome to Drama Wednesdays! The first drama up for discussion is King of Dramas starring Kim Myung Min and Jung Ryeo Won. I find myself really liking dramas that didn't do so hot domestically and King of Dramas was no different. It really took you behind the scenes of the k-entertainment industry and had us find things out that we can never unsee. Ever.
The backdrop is the entertainment industry, mainly the drama production side and what can basically go on behind the scenes. From the casting to the actual problems that can occur during the dreaded live shoot system to seeing exactly how product placement ends up happening. Yes, that's one thing I cannot unsee, any type of product placement in dramas or movies. Thank you writers, thanks a lot. Anthony and many of his colleagues are seen as ruthless and will do anything to make their dramas successful including throwing someone under the bus. This is exactly what happens to Anthony when a delivery motorist dies, he's thrown out and his former colleague (Oh Jin Wan played by Jung Man Shik) is soon in his place, doing the same thing he did while he was in that position.
Aside from seeing Anthony climb his way back to the top, we also see how much being at the bottom has changed him. His relationship with Go Eun transforms the way he looks at things and in turn it makes him more humble. He's faced with an even bigger obstacle than just losing his money and this really puts his new found look on life to the test and we see how much he has truly changed for the better. He actually has a heart and cares for those who work under him, something he didn't really care to do when he was in his former position.
You feel kind of bad watching Min Ah attempting to get back with Anthony because it's obvious she knows nothing about who he really is while Go Eun has seen him. I guess this is the same for most dramas, the second female leads in reality knows nothing about the lead except what he's shown her while the lead demands to see the real person, not a facade. Go Eun's presence also seemed to change Hyun Min as well, she was one of the first outside of his circle to truly see him and actually befriend him. Her friendly nature easily made those around her root for her and quickly come to her defense when needed.
This drama is about second chances and how your chance at success can come from the least likeliest of places.
Need further convincing to see it? Let's see if Siwon can sway you ;)
