Mid-Series Review: Answer Me 1994
Well it's time for another mid-series review and I chose non other than my favorite drama that's airing right now: Answer Me 1994 starring Go Ara and Jung Woo. So is this show worth watching? Well read on for the mini mid-series review.
I was one of the many who was skeptical about a sequel or a prequel to highly successful Answer Me 1997 drama that aired last year. How can you possibly live up to a drama like that? Not to mention some weren't on board with lead actress Go Ara, though most of the dislike has to do with the fact that she's from SM Entertainment. I shall not get into that. I had no expectations since i had not seen her act before and I thank the heavens I wasn't influenced by the negativity. Go Ara is doing a wonderful job as Sung Na Jung. Just like its predecessor, the cast also includes idols: Baro from B1A4 and Dohee from Tiny-G who both are doing great jobs in their roles as Binggurae and Jo Yoon Jin. The two leading men come in the form of Jung Woo and Yoo Yeon Suk, who's characters Trash and Chilbong are both competing for the heart of Na Jung.
Just like AM97, AM94's plot also somewhat revolves around who the husband will be. So from time to time, we get scenes in 2013 at Na Jung's housewarming party. Little by little we receive some hints, but not enough tell truly say who it is. The PD has already said the cast doesn't know who the husband is and that could change over the course of the show.
As much as I want to know who the husband is, that's not always the central theme of every episode. I appreciate the emphasis of family and learning to appreciate those around you even those you don't see everyday. During one episode, Hae Tae (Son Ho Joon) is busy trying to hang out with friends that he becomes irritated whenever his mother calls worried because she hears about something that happens in Seoul. Each time he tells her that Seoul isn't as small as their hometown so she doesn't need to worry so much. Of course next thing you know, she's calling again because she's worried and he's in such a hurry to get her off the phone he says he's eaten something she's sent him. Na Jung is home when news of an explosion where he's from.
She pages him and leaves a message, but he doesn't get it. He comes home when she tells him about what happened and he rushes to the phone. His mother doesn't pick up the first time and he's worried when she finally does answer. His mother tells him that their home isn't that small and the explosion happened on the other side of town. This is when we see him emotional and sad that he's taken his mother's worried phone calls lightly. The boarder have also taken advantage of Il Hwa aka Na Jung's mom since she's become so much like their own mothers, they forgot to say thank you. To say sorry for taking advantage of her, they bought her a ring for her birthday. It was very sweet and showed how easily one can become too comfortable with someone.
Watching this drama makes me want to spend more time with my family because they genuinely enjoy spending time with each other whether it's eating dinner or watching the finale of Hourglass. It's all about family and quality time regardless if you're blood related or not.
Because this is a drama and for the first 9 or so episodes, we weren't sure who Yoon Jin was married to either. It shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone considering they bickered a lot, but now they we know they're together(and we have his real name) they have great chemistry as a couple like they did as people who hated each other. I never expected the 2nd kiss on this show to go to Samchunpo and Yoon Jin. That sunset kiss was really cute and topped Chilbongie's New Year's kiss to Na Jung. The sunset while they were on the boat just made it really special He moved quick having figured out his feelings like a day before. They're my official OTP since Na Jung isn't in a relationship yet.
The plot actually really begun to move along with the love triangle now that Trash Oppa has acknowledged his feelings about Na Jung to Haetae and Chilbongie and has officially moved out of the boarding house to live with his hyung. How will he continue to spend time with her if they're not living together and when will he actually confess his feelings for her? With him being gone, this does give Chilbongie some much needed alone and heart swaying time with her, he has officially moved in with them.
With 11 episodes having passed, I can tell Answer Me 1994 has its own colors and the great story line with the cast's chemistry is proof as to why the ratings are over 9%.
I know this is a short review, but I also review this for Drama Fever every week so I'm not burning myself on reviews for this drama. Make sure to catch up on those!
